Coming to ETSU on a basketball scholarship, Jeffrey Scott Daniel excelled at the sport, as well as being a skilled baseball player for the Bucs. During his student tenure, Scott had an earth-shattering experience when the plane carrying ETSU’s basketball team caught fire and crashed in Jasper, Alabama. Miraculously, everyone was hustled off the plane before it burst into flames and no one was killed. Majoring in Criminal Justice and Criminology, Scott planned on following in family members’ footsteps who were employed by the United States Department of Justice. Although he is currently a Regional Account Manager for OptioRx, a premiere national compounding pharmacy, he praises ETSU’s Criminal Justice department with instilling discipline, accountability, and the desire to advance in his chosen career. Living in Pikeville, Kentucky, Daniel is the proud father of a son and daughter, Kash and Julia, who are both successful like their dad. This Mental Health Awareness Month, we’re collaborating with Becky Buller and East Tennessee State University to share how music can support healing, connection, and mental well-being.

Award-winning bluegrass artist and ETSU alumna Becky Buller joined ETSU’s College of Public Health “Leading Voices in Public Health” lecture series in February to present “A Year of Jubilee: Healing the Mental Health Conversations Behind our Music.” During the lecture, Buller shared the inspiration behind her latest album, “Jubilee,” and how the process became not only a musical journey, but also a path toward healing.

For Buller, music creates a space that is both vulnerable and safe, allowing an outlet for expressing difficult emotions, connecting with others, and reminding people they are not alone. Through music, she hopes to inspire healing and offer hope to those facing mental health challenges.

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, please reach out for support. For immediate help and support, dial 988. Musicians in need of mental health resources can also call 855-BLINE99 or text 254-939 for 24/7 support.

A kindergarten teacher at Harpeth Valley Elementary School in Nashville, TN, Kaci Olinger earned a BS in Early Childhood Development and an MS in Curriculum & Instruction. She always knew she wanted to work with younger children, so she chose a degree that would help her learn the best way to teach them. Dr. Katherine Sharp, a professor in the PreK-3 program was her favorite due to the way she encouraged her along the way. In addition to teaching kindergarten, Olinger also mentors 5th graders and coaches them for Quiz Bowl. In her leisure time, Kaci enjoys reading and kayaking.
