This morning, we had the pleasure of hosting speakers from the Appalachian Highlands Humane Society, Director, Abbey Johnson, President of the Board, Lucinda Grandy, and Board Member, Dr. Turney Williams. Abbey delivered a presentation highlighting the organization's reliance on grants, fundraising initiatives, and donations, which facilitate their efforts in rescuing animals that have been abandoned, injured, or found roaming the streets. Notably, she introduced KOA, a rescue animal diagnosed with a congenital liver shunt, whose life-saving surgery was made possible through the funds raised by the organization. Our club president, Ken Misterly presented our quarterly donation to their organization.

This morning our speaker was Steve Darden, Candidate for Judge – Washington County. Throughout his career as a lawyer, mediator, and Mayor, Steve has remained guided by the words of Micah 6:8: “To do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God.” Steve is a listener who seeks to understand before being understood. He has the type of temperament and patience that are essential qualities for a Judge.

Our speaker this morning was Joe Nowotarski, Park Manager at David Crockett Birthplace State Park.

Joe Nowotarski worked tirelessly alongside emergency crews to assess damage, clear debris and protect the fragile ecosystems of David Crockett Birthplace State Park in Limestone, Tennessee. For these efforts, he was awarded with the 2025 George Masa Environmental Stewardship Award.

As floodwaters rose and high winds toppled trees, Nowotarski coordinated the safe relocation of native wildlife and implemented temporary erosion controls to preserve the historic site’s natural landscape.

His efforts not only helped restore vital trails and facilities but also ensured the park could reopen to the public sooner, preserving its environmental and cultural heritage in the wake of the storm.

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation announced a master plan for the rebirth of David Crockett Birthplace State Park. The storm caused severe damage to the historic site that has welcomed visitors since the mid-1800s and has been a Tennessee state park since 1973. Residents of Northeast Tennessee helped guide the park’s future through a public planning process.
