More than a year has passed since Hurricane Helene destroyed much of the Laurel Creek Trail. More than 400 volunteer hours and nearly $100,000 have been spent by Johnson County Trails Association (JCTA) on repairing the trail to where hikers can once again enjoy the beauty of the area. This effort represents a small portion of JCTA’s work on trail reclamation in our county. The Iron Moutain Trail (IMT), which connects Johnson County with Damascus, Virginia, also suffered tremendous damage from last years’ storm. The IMT, previously managed by the Kingsport Hiking Club, is now managed by the JCTA through a Memorandum of Understanding with the Cherokee Forest Service, a subdivision of the National Forest Service (NFS). Our “GO-TO” person at the NFS is Brandon Church, Forestry Technician, who is also working on other trail systems within the Cherokee Forest, including Gentry Falls which was rendered impassable by the storm.
JCTA is also partnering with other non-profit trail groups as well as private businesses including a local horse service that can carry equipment to areas unreachable by motorized vehicles.
It is a challenging yet rewarding time to be part of this great effort to restore our local trail systems. We invite all hiking enthusiasts to become a Friend of JCTA.
