Once again a fun-tastic Tuesday at Rotary! Steve Darden got us rolling with his promotion of “Liberty!” Beth Ledbetter spoke about her leadership in the Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO) that provides college scholarships to women. And of course there was lots of AI soccer and basketball fun courtesy of President Cyrus Fees. Rotary District 7570

Beth Ledbetter will be our guest tomorrow and will be our presenter. Beth was born in Jacksboro, Texas and began Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) journey 48 years ago in Chadron, Nebraska. Less than a year later, she moved with her family to Johnson City, TN and became a charter member through transfer to newly organized Chapter AE, Johnson City. Beth served as general chairman of the Tennessee State Convention held in Johnson City in 1988 – the first time the convention was held in NE Tennessee; she was elected to the Tennessee state board in 1995, serving as president in 2001; she was appointed immediately to the P.E.O. International board of trustees for the P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education; she then completed a six-year term in 2007 and was elected the same year to the Executive Board of International Chapter as recording secretary and presided 10 years later as president at the Convention of International Chapter in Charlotte, NC in 2017. (Fun fact: She is the only person from Tennessee to have been elected president of International Chapter.)

Apart from P.E.O., she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and established a real estate appraisal firm in Johnson City in 1984, after achieving national certification through the Appraisal Institute and general certification through the state, she officially retired in 2019 after 35 years. Beth served through ten years of appointments by the governor of Tennessee on the Assessment Appeals Commission for the Tennessee State Board of Equalization. She resigned from that in 2017.

Beth has held leadership positions in the Appraisal Institute for the southeast district of the US, and in the state organization. She has also held several leadership positions in her church and on the church conference. She is currently content to be useful on the local level of church and P.E.O.

Beth has been married over 50 years to Dr. Howard Ledbetter; together they raised three sons who married wisely and produced seven outstanding grandchildren. They also have two great-grands!

Great program Tuesday from member Randy Hensley of Coalition for Kids. Randy said third grade reading level is a key determinant for life performance. C4K started by building playgrounds - not walls. A beautiful memorial service for Ed Casida today led by Gary McAllister and Ben Siler. Gary was his classmate, fraternity brother and fellow service member. Several friends of Ed’s attended. He was remembered fondly by President Cyrus Fees for his service to our country and to Rotary International where he took several trips abroad providing wheelchairs to those in need. We are fortunate to have our own Randy Hensley presenting our program Tuesday!

Randy is the founding Executive Director of Coalition For Kids, which he launched in 1998 with just 25 children in a Johnson City apartment complex. Today, Coalition For Kids serves more than 1,000 children each day across Johnson City, Bristol City, and Washington County through programs in 25 schools, supported by 120 team members and more than 1,000 volunteers annually.

In addition to his nonprofit leadership, Randy has served in pastoral ministry since 1994. He is the founding Lead Pastor of The Rock Fellowship Church, a non-denominational church in Johnson City.

Randy and his wife, Melanie, have been married for 37 years. They are blessed with six children, two grandsons, and one granddaughter. Come hear about how he is making a difference in our community.

A great Johnson City turnout for the installation of our new District Governor Charlotte Whitted (on stage) of Abingdon. Our own Gary McAllister was again sworn in as Area Governor along with several other district leaders. The official term starts July 1. Congratulations to all! Rotary District 7570
