✨ "Fragments of (South) Africa" è su Vatican News! ✨

Today, as we look forward to World Refugee Day on the 20th of June 2026, Scalabrini pauses to recognise the strength, courage and resilience of refugees, asylum seekers and all people on the move.

Around the world, millions of people have been forced to leave their homes because of conflict, persecution, violence, economic hardship and other circumstances beyond their control. Behind every statistic is a human story, a parent seeking safety for their child, a young person searching for opportunity, a family hoping to rebuild their lives with dignity.

At a time when migration is the subject of intense public debate in South Africa and across the world, we look at World Refugee Day as a reminder of our shared humanity. While communities face real social and economic challenges, we believe that lasting solutions are built through dialogue, understanding and respect for the dignity of every person.

Refugees and migrants are more than labels, statistics and numbers. They are neighbours, colleagues, entrepreneurs, students, friends and community members who contribute to the social, cultural and economic life of our country every day.

This World Refugee Day, we invite everyone to choose compassion over fear, understanding over division, and solidarity over exclusion.

Together, with strength and courage, we build communities where every person can belong.

Over the past 25 years, the Bienvenu Shelter has woven a network of connections and solidarity. Beyond walls and borders, it has become a place and a path of stories, where each of them speaks of a life welcomed and a dream nurtured.
In 2018, CSEM, in partnership with Bienvenu Shelter, the Sisters’ community and other institutions, co-organised CSEM´s 1st International Conference in Johannesburg/South Africa, under the theme and title “Rebuilding Life at the Borders”, thereby creating the first space for dialogue between academics, civil society representatives and migrants from various countries and continents. This marked the beginning of what would become ICoMiR, now in its 4th edition.
Celebrating these 25 years alongside the Bienvenu Shelter team is also a celebration of the charism that guides the institution and to value the partnership that has been built and strengthened to promote the agency of migrants and refugees. Welcoming, protecting, promoting migrants and refugees, especially women and children is a movement of mutual transformation in the lives of those who are welcomed and in the lives of those who care for and welcome them.
We hope that the coming years will be filled with the same affection, creativity and hope for transforming the world. Long live the Bienvenu Shelter!

With fond regards,
The CSEM Team.
