Today is the day we pause to honor and remember the lives lost on December 7, 1941—a day that forever changed the course of history. The attack on Pearl Harbor was a tragedy that struck at the heart of our nation. Tomorrow also marks the anniversary of the start of the Battle of the Philippine’s. An event largely overshadowed by the attack on Pearl Harbor. Despite being under-equipped, undersupplied, and facing disease and starvation, the Allied defenders fought valiantly for months. However, by April 9, 1942, the situation became untenable. Faced with overwhelming Japanese forces, the Allied troops on Bataan were ordered to surrender.
The aftermath of the surrender was one of the darkest chapters of the war: the Bataan Death March. Approximately 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war were forced to march over 65 miles in sweltering heat to Japanese prison camps. Along the way, thousands died from exhaustion, starvation, disease, or brutal treatment by their captors. Those who survived endured years of horrific conditions in captivity. Our namesake, Robert Jones, was among those who were killed in this battle.
These terrible events awakened the indomitable spirit of the American people. In the face of unimaginable loss and adversity, we rose as one. We answered the call not just to defend our nation but to stand for freedom, justice, and the rights of all people. The sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation remind us that America is, and always will be, a force for good in the world.
But their legacy also teaches us another lesson: we must never let our guard down. The peace and freedoms we enjoy today come at a cost—a cost paid by those who stood watch, those who served, and those who sacrificed. It is our duty to remain vigilant, united, and unwavering in the face of challenges to those freedoms.
So today, let us remember Pearl Harbor not only as a moment of sorrow but as a testament to our resilience and strength. Let us honor the courage of those who gave their all, and let us renew our commitment to safeguarding the ideals they fought to protect.
Thank you. God bless those who serve and protect us, and God bless America.
