Screven is the first city in Wayne County to proclaim Family Court Awareness Month. The mayor and I graduated together. The people in that room have shown up for me my entire life, with endless support.

I had no idea how it would feel to see my home and my home people officially stand up for children with me. It brought tears to my eyes. It was absolutely beautiful.

Thank you to the Mayor, City Council of Screven, and everyone who made this possible.

On Sunday I had the honor of speaking at The Heart of a Movement, alongside Connie Valentine and many of the heroes and sheroes who built the Protective Parents movement before most of us knew it had a name.

Barry Goldstein. Joan Meier. Bob Geffner. Maralee McLean. Richard Ducote. Ana Estevez. Susie Cordova Rose. Dorit Reichental. Jane Stoever. Sandy Ross. Marivic Mabanag. And many others.

The event was built around three things:

Honoring Our Pioneers.
Celebrating Our Victories.
Carrying the Movement Forward.

Family Court Awareness Month was part of that last one.

I take that very seriously.

November exists because people spent decades insisting that children's safety belongs at the center of custody decisions. They were building a cathedral they would never see finished. One we continue to build today. They researched. They wrote. They litigated. They advocated. They kept showing up, with no pay and more nos than we can imagine.

We are carrying something that was built by legends. But our cathedral is far from finished.

The Barron Foundation was proud to partner on this event with the UC Irvine Initiative to End Family Violence, California Protective Parents Association, and Limón Creative Co.

To the pioneers who started this work, to those who carried it through the years, and to everyone who continues to show up, speak out, advocate, and create change: Thank you. The blood, sweat, and tears matter. Your work matters.

And thank you for trusting those of us coming behind you to help carry the movement forward.

58,000 children a year are ordered into unsupervised contact with a parent they are afraid of.

Not alleged. Not suspected.

Ordered — by a judge, in a courtroom, after somebody tried to stop it.

That number is why November exists.

Family Court Awareness Month is how the people living this find out they aren't the only one, and how everybody else finds out it's happening at all.

The Georgia Court of Appeals has vacated a trial court order in a custody case that barred a mother from posting “any negative content” about the case, the father, or the child online with no end date.

Dunn v. Greer, A26A0088, decided June 24, 2026. A significant decision for Georgia parents whose custody orders restrict their speech.

The Court recognized that family judges can restrict social media during a custody proceeding. But those restrictions are not unlimited. Before restraining a parent’s speech, a court must consider the danger said to flow from that speech and balance it against the parent’s First Amendment rights.

That had not happened here.

The Court found insufficient evidence to justify the breadth of the restriction, concluded that it was not narrowly tailored, and sent the case back for the required analysis.

Why this matters: the Court concluded that criticism of the judicial system did not warrant restraint in this case. Courts and judges do not have greater immunity from public criticism simply because they are courts and judges.

For protective parents, the principle is important: a speech restriction in a custody order is not beyond constitutional challenge.

Georgia just became the first state in the country to recognize Hot Pink Day.

On August 21, Governor Brian Kemp signed a proclamation declaring November 2026 as Family Court Awareness Month in Georgia, and November 18, 2026, as Hot Pink Day.

Hot Pink Day is new. It has never existed before this year.

It falls on the third Wednesday of every November, and the ask is one sentence:

Wear something pink, on a working Wednesday, where people will see it and ask you why.

Georgia said yes first.

Read what Georgia actually put its seal on, because the language matters.

The proclamation names the courts.

It states that more than 58,000 children each year are ordered by courts into unsupervised contact with a dangerous parent following divorce or separation.

It names the 944 children the Center for Judicial Excellence has documented killed since 2008 in circumstances involving divorce, separation, custody, visitation, or child support.

And then it says the thing protective parents have been trying to make institutions hear for years:

In a significant number of those cases, a court had been informed in advance of a documented history of violence.

Read that again.

A state government put its seal on it.

For every parent who raised a safety concern and was dismissed.

For every child who tried to tell the truth and was not believed.

For every family that learned too late what happens when evidence of danger is treated as conflict instead of warning.

Now we build on it.

Your city can be next.

Your county can be next.

Your state can be next.

The 2026 Proclamation Toolkit is free: a ready-to-send request letter, model proclamation language, and a one-page fact sheet for officials.

Councils are setting their autumn agendas right now. Some offices need up to 60 days.

Labor Day is the real deadline.

267 jurisdictions across 26 states are already on the record. Tennessee's 77 were built by two women.

Do not underestimate what one person with a letter and the refusal to be ignored can set in motion.

Georgia said yes first.
