JCAST is happy to announce
BEN F. JONES as the
2026 JCAST LEGEND AWARDEE.

The JCAST Legend Award honors Jersey City residents who have made significant, pioneering contributions to the arts locally and globally. The award was launched in 2025 to recognize members of Jersey City arts community.

JCAST Legends Award is for the recognition of extraordinary lifetime contributions to the arts, education, and the cultural life of Jersey City.

Ben F. Jones' work as an artist, educator, mentor, and visionary has profoundly shaped generations of artists and enriched the creative fabric of this city and far beyond. His commitment to artistic excellence, social justice, and community has made a lasting impact, and we are deeply honored to celebrate his legacy through this recognition.

The award will be presented on October 1 at 7pm at JCAST Official Kick-Off Event in the Heights.

Ben Jones was born in New Jersey in 1941. He received an MFA from Pratt University, MA from New York University and BFA from William Paterson University. Jones has made over fifty cultural exchange visits to Cuba since the 1970s, and is noted by the Granma International of Havana, Cuba as one of the most important African-American artists of his
generation. For over four decades, Jones’ multimedia installations have reflected his travel and research in Africa, Europe, South America,
United States and the Caribbean.

Jones political consciousness developed early as he began to create art that expressed the social conditions of his time as a key part of his activism. Works from the 1970s onwards reflected the artist’s exploration of his African American heritage; including African spiritualism and ritual, body painting traditions as well as jazz and soul music. His long-time engagement with the Black Power / Black Arts
movements, as evidenced by depictions of Malcolm X and others, has broadened over the years to encompass his deep concern for the environment and the survival of all life forms.

Take a look at the historic Pathside Building at 25 Journal Square, a reminder of the rich history that has shaped our district for generations.

For decades, Journal Square served as a hub of commerce, culture, and connection, welcoming residents, businesses, and visitors from across the region. Buildings like the Pathside Building stood at the center of a thriving downtown and helped define the character of the neighborhood we know and love today.

While we celebrate our past, we’re equally excited about our future. Journal Square is experiencing a new chapter of growth with new residents, new businesses, public spaces, community events, and continued investment throughout the district. The energy that made Journal Square a destination generations ago is alive and well today.

As The New Journal Square continues to support local businesses, activate public spaces, and build community, we’re proud to be part of the district’s ongoing story.

Here’s to honoring our history while helping shape what’s next.
