About the Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage Festival & Parade
Founded in 1961 out of a need for cultural identification by Rafael Rodriguez, Diego Berrios, Juan Benitez, Primitivo Valle, Rafael Bou and Santiago Bonilla, the group organized the first Puerto Rican Day Parade in Jersey City.
Its 57 year history has grown from a small marching group into what is considered to be the largest parade celebrating Puerto Rican culture in New Jersey. A yearlong event in the planning, this cultural affair includes events that celebrate the diversity of Puerto Rican culture and its influence through Culinary Arts, Artisans, Bomba & Plena, Dance, Percussion, Poetry, Music and Pageantry, to name a few.
The theme for the 58th Annual jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage Festival & Parade is “Festival de las Flores” (Festival of Flowers). We felt that “Festival de las Flores” is especially fitting as we plan to host an array of events and community gatherings highlighting the natural beauty within the landscape of our Isla Bonita. The destruction caused by the 2017 hurricane season has made it vital to honor and support the rebirth and rebuilding phase in Puerto Rico to restore it to it’s lush, natural beauty.
The 58th Annual Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage Festival and Parade honors the late Francisco “Junito” Rodriguez as a proud member of the Jersey City Puerto Rican community who sponsored different organizations during his lifetime in Jersey City. He was a constant supporter of the Jersey City Puerto Rican Parade and shared the vision for a revitalized parade filled with community, music, culture and Puerto Rican pride.
On October 2, 2017, the Puerto Rican Community and Jersey City lost one of it’s most notable leaders, Dr. Eliu Rivera. He was known for his efforts throughout the Puerto Rican community through his efforts at PACO, as former Deputy Mayor and Hudson County Freeholder. Dr. Rivera was loved for his ability to empower people for the continued benefit of the community. We announce with great pride that the 58th Annual Jersey City Puerto Rican Festival and Parade will honor Dr. Rivera’s life and work.
The 59th Annual Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage and Festival honors Puerto Rico!! We honor them for the unity and strength displayed through such hardships! Together they became one!
