National CPR and AED Awareness Week, observed annually from June 1–7, highlights the critical importance of intervention during medical emergencies. Immediate CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can significantly improve survival outcomes for individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest, as the chance of survival decreases with every minute that passes without intervention.
Serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) requires a high level of preparedness, accountability, and responsiveness. Many individuals receiving services may have complex medical needs, communication barriers, mobility limitations, or underlying health conditions that increase vulnerability during life-threatening emergencies.
In New Jersey, I/DD staff are legally required to maintain current CPR and First Aid certification through an approved training provider to ensure they are prepared to respond quickly and appropriately when an individual experiences a life-threatening emergency (LTE).
