Remembering Mayor Glenn Cunningham on his 83rd birthday. He became Jersey City’s first Black mayor in 2001. He was a child of Greenville, a graduate of Snyder, a 25 year veteran of the JCPD, a US Marine, Council President, State Senator, and United States Marshal for the District of New Jersey appointed by President Bill Clinton. But above all, Mayor Cunningham was a beloved husband, family man, friend, and community member. He sadly passed away in 2004 midway through his term, leaving the City heartbroken. It’s hard not to wonder what he would’ve accomplished had he lived, but we are so grateful for his contributions to the City that he loved so much. His profound impact is still felt today. Join us this evening at the Glenn D. Cunningham Library as we honor his birthday and legacy. Thank you to Mayor Solomon & the Jersey City Council for declaring September 16th as “Glenn D. Cunningham Day” forevermore. Rest peacefully, Mayor Cunningham. You are deeply missed.

Today we pause to remember the tragic loss of thousands of beautiful souls on September 11th, 2001, and the countless others who have died due to 9/11 related cancer in the 25 years following that horrible day. We send our deepest thanks to all the heroic first responders who risked their lives to save others, and our continued love and prayers to the families of those who are no longer with us. I believe 9/11/01 to be my earliest memory, at only 4 years old. Without all the newer high-rises along the waterfront, it seemed like everywhere in Jersey City had an unobstructed view of lower Manhattan. I vividly remember the smoke in the sky, the smell in the air and the palpable sense of shock and horror surrounding us all. But in the 25 years that have followed, what I remember even more clearly is the unity and love felt across our country and in our neighborhoods. I especially remember the privilege of watching the Freedom Tower being built from the ground up throughout my entire childhood, which to me remains a symbol of optimism, perseverance, and perhaps most of all, home. Sending love and prayers to everyone, everywhere impacted by this tragedy. We will never forget. 🕊️🗽♾️
