John De Salvo Playground Community Garden Under the Jersey City Adopt-A-Lot program, a group of neighbors started a community flower garden

The design of the garden includes a meandering path and flowers that are attractive to butterflies. We also focus on plants that are visually impressive in size and color like mammoth sunflowers and hollyhocks, and those that invite touching like the velvety texture of a lamb's ear. As a lawn replacement in the area closest to the children's water sprinklers, we are working on growing a fragrant g

round cover using plants like creeping thyme and corsican mint. Since the garden is inside a playground we have to steer clear of plants that are known to be toxic, much to the delight of the local squirrels.

This week we planted 100+ Daffodil, Crocus & Muscari bulbs in the garden.

Students from The Brunswick School in Downtown Jersey City, along with neighborhood High School students, were excellent helpers with the task!

A big thank you to the Hamilton Park Neighborhood Association for their ongoing support and the Jersey City Parks Coalition for the daffodil bulbs donated as part of this year's Big Dig.

This week we fenced off the garden, replenished the soil and completed some other fall tasks with the help of local middle school students. We were so thankful for their help and look forward to restoring this garden for all to enjoy!
