Bike JC NOTE: We don’t sell, rent, buy, service, or store bikes. We believe a bike-friendly city is safer for everyone.

Bike JC is a community-based advocacy organization that aims to make Jersey City streets safe and welcoming for bicyclists, by promoting bike lane creation, bike parking, education, and group rides. We are bicyclists, commuters, parents, BMX riders, businesspeople, planners, and advocates for the full potential of Jersey City. We are committed to working with our neighborhoods, schools, and elected officials to make Jersey City the most bike-friendly city in the state. We want to help bicyclists commute, exercise, enjoy scenic rides, ferry children to activities, and head out shopping in increasing numbers in the immediate future. Studies have shown that the mere presence of more bicyclists (and pedestrians) encourages motorists to drive with more caution and decreases accidents. Bicycle lanes not only tend to increase the number of cyclists but can act as a traffic calming measure, helping pedestrians navigate streets safely as well. Bicycling is also economical, easy on the environment, and transforms the average commute into a great workout.

Please join us for our final scheduled Light-Up Ride of 2026 this Friday, 10/9! Meets 6:30 at Grove PATH Plaza, 7:00 pm rollout.

This month, we’ll take a short loop Downtown before heading to Lincoln Park and across the Hackensack River bridge to roll through South Kearny. Then back into Lincoln Park and return Downtown. Optional theme: wear orange or black for the Fall/Halloween season!

Most streets are designed around one assumption:

cars move through them.

Dutch planners began challenging that idea.

During the twentieth century, growing car ownership transformed residential neighbourhoods. Streets that had once been places where children played and neighbours met increasingly became traffic routes and parking spaces.

Dutch communities began experimenting with another model.

The woonerf.

Instead of separating a road into a dominant carriageway with pedestrians pushed to the edges, woonerven deliberately mixed functions.

Cars could still enter.

But they were expected to behave as guests.

Street design used paving, bends, planting, furniture and other visual cues to make drivers slow down and recognize that the space belonged to people too.

Children could play.

Residents could walk.

Cars no longer automatically controlled the geometry of the neighbourhood.

The Dutch concept attracted international attention.

Versions of the woonerf philosophy spread abroad and helped influence later ideas such as shared-space streets and residential traffic calming.

Today the principle feels familiar in many countries.

That familiarity hides how radical the original question was.

What if a residential street was not primarily a miniature highway?

The Dutch answer was to redesign the street itself.

Not simply tell drivers to slow down.

Make the environment tell them they were entering somebody else's living space.
