Jersey City Arts Council in partnership with the Office of Cultural Affairs welcome applications for the next Poet Laureate. Applications remain open until November 6, 2026.

The Poet Laureate serves as an ambassador for poetry, representing the artistic spirit of Jersey City while fostering public appreciation for the literary arts. This role involves a variety of responsibilities including: poetry readings, workshops, special events, and collaborations with local organizations to inspire and engage residents through the power of poetry. The Jersey City Arts Council evaluates nominations for Poet Laureate, including creative excellence and community impact. The Jersey City Arts Council sends finalists’ names and supporting recommendations to the Mayor of Jersey City, who appoints the Poet Laureate with the advice and consent of City Council.

📣 JC ARTS COMMUNITY: Creating Change 2026 is coming!

Jersey City Arts Council is proud to help spread the word about Creating Change 2026: Community and Culture Shift, an annual gathering bringing together artists, arts leaders, cultural workers, and partners committed to building a more just, equitable, accessible, and anti-racist arts sector.

This year’s summit invites the arts and culture community from New Jersey and neighboring states to come together for a day of connection, learning, and action.

Creating Change 2026 will explore how we strengthen relationships, build collective power, and develop the skills needed for meaningful cross-sector partnership—especially at a time when connection and collaboration across our communities are more important than ever.

✨ The day will feature:
🎤 A keynote address by Emil Kang
👂 A collective active-listening workshop led by Donna Walker-Kuhne
🤝 Breakout sessions exploring power sharing, repair, effective feedback, and navigating conflict

JCAC believes that a thriving arts ecosystem is built through connection, collaboration, learning, and shared growth. We encourage Jersey City artists, arts administrators, cultural organizations, and community partners to join colleagues from across the region for this important gathering.

Over the past year, Jersey City Arts Council (JCAC) has been engaged in a strategic planning process to help shape the organization’s priorities, goals, and objectives for its next chapter. As JCAC celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2026, the Board of Directors sees this milestone as an important opportunity to establish new priorities and articulate a renewed vision for JCAC’s role within Jersey City’s arts and cultural landscape. ✨ A Year of Listening, Learning & Building Together

A little over a year ago, JCAC Executive Director Deonté Griffin-Quick began his tenure with an invitation to Jersey City’s arts community: to connect, share, challenge, and imagine what the future of our creative ecosystem could look like together.

In his latest Letter to the City, Deonté reflects on a year spent listening to artists and cultural leaders, strengthening partnerships, launching new initiatives, growing JCAC’s capacity, and working alongside our Board, Advisory Committee, and community to clarify the Arts Council’s role in Jersey City.
