Wishing you a meaningful Juneteenth!
For more than one-and-a-half centuries, the Juneteenth holiday has been sacred to many Black communities.
It marks the day in 1865 enslaved people in Galveston, Texas found out they had been freed — after the end of the Civil war, and two years after President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation.
The AFL-CIO commemorates Juneteenth as a day to reflect on the end of slavery in the United States and to reaffirm its commitment to racial justice and equity within the labor movement. The labor movement acknowledges the ongoing economic disparities faced by Black Americans and the need to root out systemic racism in the workplace and society. The AFL-CIO also recognizes Juneteenth as a celebration of Black resilience and joy and a reminder of the ongoing fight for freedom and justice.
