PUBLIC’S HELP SOUGHT LOCATING MAN WANTED IN CONNECTION WITH JERSEY CITY FATAL SHOOTING

Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello has released the following information:

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit is seeking the public’s help in locating a 36-year-old male wanted in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in Jersey City on Sunday, June 28, 2026.

Raheem Rhett, of Jersey City, is charged with Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-3a(1)/(2), three counts of Attempted Murder in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:5-1a(1)/2C:11-3a(1), Aggravated Assault in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1b(1), two counts of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon (fi***rm) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5b(1), Possession of a Weapon (fi***rm) for an Unlawful Purpose in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-4a(1), and Certain Persons Not to Possess a Weapon (fi***rm) in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-7a.

The defendant should not be approached and anyone with information regarding Rhett’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Office of the Hudson County Prosecutor at 201-915-1345 or to leave an anonymous tip at hcpo.org/tips. All information will be kept confidential. A photo of the defendant is attached.

At approximately 2:30 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department was notified of shots fired on Orient Avenue near MLK Jr. Drive. Responding officers located an injured male – later identified as Jenaro Tejada, 38, of Jersey City – with apparent gunshot wound(s). He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased a short time later. The Cause and Manner of Death are pending with the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office. During the response, a second victim, a 45-year-old male from Jersey City, was located on Jackson Square with an apparent gunshot wound.

The above charges are merely accusations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty. R.P.C.3.6(b)(6)
