Travel ball parents, this one's for you. βΎ
If your son pitches for more than one team, you are the only one counting his pitches. Most coaches only see their own games. Nobody else is tracking the total.
Travel teams and travel coaches only care about the money and the wins. They don't care about your child's arm.
A 10-year-old should never throw 90 pitches, then come back a few days later and throw 48 more. The limit for ages 9-10 is 75 pitches a day, with 4 days of rest after 66 or more.
I personally knew a kid this happened to. He was a gifted pitcher with a full scholarship to a private school. His travel team leaned on his arm hard. At his freshman tryout, at just 14, he couldn't throw the ball. The scholarship was gone, and his mom couldn't afford the tuition, so he had to transfer. His career was over before high school ball even started.
Protect his arm:
β’ Get a clicker and count every pitch, in games and practices
β’ Track rest days across ALL teams
β’ Stop him if he says it hurts
β’ Give him 2-3 months a year with no overhead throwing
You're his voice, not the coach. If you say he's done, he's done.
Don't chase the glory. Chase his health. Nobody remembers a 10-year-old's win-loss record, but a 14-year-old with a ruined arm remembers everything.
