Freedom Reads

Freedom Reads Freedom begins with a book.

Books don’t just tell stories. Sometimes, they change the entire direction of a life.

In this video, talks about his friend Rui from Portugal, who is writing a book about people who have done great things with books. Dwayne will be one of the people featured.

For us, that feels especially meaningful. Because at Freedom Reads, we believe a book can be more than words on pages. It can be a doorway, a mirror, a companion, a beginning.

Leaving with full hearts.

The conversations, reflections, and connections made during the 2026 Inside Literary Prize will stay with us long after this visit. Grateful for every reader, every story, and every voice that made today unforgettable.

Until next time.

From Connecticut to Washington State, the journey for the 2026 Inside Literary Prize brought us to this moment.

Just outside the facility doors, the excitement was real—the culmination of months of reading, discussion, and connection through literature. We were honored to stand alongside incarcerated readers whose voices and insights continue to reshape the literary landscape.

Then we went inside.

“What does it mean to move forward after incarceration?”

In this powerful conversation, Dwayne Betts reflects on the making of March Forth, a documentary screening at the Tribeca Festival that explores resilience, redemption, and the transformative power of art.

In this clip, answers the question: What is the journey that led you to Tribeca? And it starts exactly where his life changed forever, with books, with possibility, with a decision to March Forth.

But the real story is bigger than one premiere. It’s about what happens when literature shows up on the inside.

Catch March Forth at Tribeca on June 13th or June 14th. Link in bio for tickets.
