Winterberry: Beauty with a Purpose

Winterberry (Ilex verticillata) is a New Jersey native shrub whose bright red berries bring color to the landscape after its leaves fall. Those berries provide valuable fall and winter food for birds, including robins, bluebirds, and cedar waxwings. Planting winterberry adds seasonal beauty while helping support local wildlife. Female plants need a nearby male winterberry with overlapping bloom time to produce berries.

After the storm, take a look at where the water traveled.

Did it pool beside your home, rush across the lawn, wash away soil, or flow directly into the street?

These areas may be telling you where native plants can help.

Where deep-rooted native trees, shrubs, grasses, sedges, and wildflowers can:

Slow and absorb stormwater
Reduce erosion
Improve soil structure
Filter runoff
Support birds, pollinators, and other wildlife

A native rain garden or densely planted garden bed can turn a wet problem area into beautiful, functional habitat. Choose plants that match the site’s sunlight, moisture, and soil conditions, and remember that plants are only one part of responsible stormwater planning around buildings.

Let the rain show you where your next native garden belongs.

🦇 Happy International Bat Night Weekend!

We’re celebrating one of the most underrated creatures in our ecosystems: bats. Bats can eat up to half their body weight in insects each night, and around the world, they provide vital ecosystem services through insect consumption, pollination, and seed dispersal.

Native plants can play an important role in supporting healthy bat populations. Native species support diverse insect communities, which means more food for bats and other insectivores. Planting natives, reducing pesticide use, and leaving some natural cover in your yard can all add up to better habitat for these night flyers. 🌿

Want to learn more? Join us on October 21 for Bats in the Backyard, a webinar with Brandi Christiano, PhD and Megan White from Bat Conservation International exploring how native plants, healthy insect populations, and thoughtful landscape choices can support bats right where you live.

This webinar is sponsored by Wild Yard. With their support, we're also excited to be working on a new bat-friendly native garden design. Stay tuned for more updates. 🦇🌱

Another BIG THANK YOU to the administrators, teachers, custodial staff, families and students at Nellie K. Parker School, and to the Xerces Society for this incredible gift of a Pollinator Habitat Kit, which included 550 native perennial plugs and two native shrubs!

These native plants will provide essential nectar and pollen for our native pollinators, as well as safe places for butterflies and other beneficial insects to lay their eggs. They will also create a valuable food source and habitat for birds, while giving students the opportunity to step outside, connect with nature, and witness the beauty of a thriving native ecosystem right on their school grounds.

This is truly a win-win for wildlife, education, and our community.

Thank you to everyone who made this project possible! 🌼🦋🐝
