At the NSMRA, we encourage our members to get involved, if possible, with historic railroading. Thankfully, we have two active steam railroads within 275 miles of the club, the Nevada Northern Railway and the Sumpter Valley Railroad. This week, we take a look at Nevada Northern engine 81. 81 was built in 1917 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and served in freight service to the end of steam in 1951. After it was retired from service, the engine along with 93 were donated to the White Pine County Museum where they sat outside for decades. In the early 90s, both engines returned to the NN. 93 was returned to operation by 1993, while 81 sat until 2019 when restoration started. 81 entered service in 2021 and has served as the Godilocks engine for the NN.

This week, we take a look at Sumpter's #19, an ALCO Mikado that is undergoing restoration. If all goes well and the creek don't rise, which after the winter we all had shouldn't be an issue, the engine will be back in steam this year alongside Heisler #3.

The new yard in Burley has been wired up and tested. Capacity on the three tracks is twenty-two 50ft cars. This yard will see quite a bit of action during operations sessions as the switching for Burley, Red Rock, and Hill City move from the staging yard to Burley Yard.
