CAVEAT: He does curse but he has some of the best advice around. EXCELLENT LESSON. This child should not have been crouching down but, even more, putting her arm around dog's neck. This dog did exactly the right thing when he didn't like this, i.e., snapped only which said "Get away from me." A dog without that constrain could easily have bitten the child or worse. A reactive dog does not need a treat when he/she breaks out. The dog needs to be taken out of the situation immediately. Not bribed with a treat or yelled out. He/she is in emotional crisis. Once you take the dog away and he/she calms down, then reward the calm behavior with soft talk, treat or whatever positive reinforcement you want. You don't have to agree with or love everything about your LOCAL public and private shelters BUT they are taking care of unwanted and often abused pet animals SO please help them out any way you can. Sometimes getting involved gives you a chance to influence them if you have good ideas. I've been working with many shelters and rescues for the past 36 years and, believe me, I can't think of any that I totally agreed with. It didn't matter as we always agreed on the most important thing: These critters need our help!

Great story. This is why dogs need to IN THE HOUSE and not the yard. They can only protect us if they are inside and part of the family!

A woman says her 80-pound pit bull, Athena, saved her life after intervening when a man allegedly ambushed her and attacked her with a hammer while her children slept upstairs.

The victim said the suspect began hitting her with the hammer as soon as she opened the door and kept attacking until the dog realized what was going on and got ahold of the man's leg.

Authorities say the suspect was arrested after he arrived at an area hospital to receive medical attention after an apparent dog attack.

"I don't think I'd be here without her. I think I'll be laying over there on the floor."

HOW DO YOU GREET A DOG you don't know or is nervous? Stop when you see dog show signs of stress like turns head away, moves back from you, or does something else like sniff the ground. Turn sideways,. Keep hands down relaxed by your side. Do NOT move including reaching out with hand. You can gllance but then turn away (don't stare!). If you saw anything, must be in low, soft tone. You have now given clear signals in dog language that you are safe and want to be friends. IMPORTANT !!!!!!!!! If the dog does not come toward you to check you out, turn and walk away; you will only scare him/her. If the dog starts to move toward you STAY STILL, including your hands. Let the dog come to you and investigate by sniffing you. If you think he/she wants interaction, ONLY touch under the chin and on the chest. If dog is short and have have to bend over, do NOT lean over the dog, lean to the side. If he/she starts to move back as you start to move, stay still and start over "telling" him/her you are safe in language the dog understands. Want to know more about "How to Talk Dog?" Excellent FREE 30 lesson dog training course on-line. Well worth the price! Highly recommend for those needed help with basic obedience and behavior issues with your dog(s). You take it in your own time and go back and review portions as needed.
