Thanks for the update!

The eastbound lane on Highway 116 in Monte Rio is paved.

In early January, a slide took out part of the eastbound lane just west of town. Caltrans brought us in as the emergency contractor, and our crews were on site within days to keep the road from going further.

Since then we have been building a soldier pile wall with concrete lagging to hold the slope and support the roadway.

A few things people have asked about:

Why has it looked like nothing is happening? Almost all of this work has taken place below the roadway, on the river side. From a car, you see K-rail and a signal. What you cannot see is a wall being built from the ground up, out of sight.

What about the river? We installed a plywood barrier below the work to catch falling debris before it reaches the water. Caltrans and our crews check it daily.

Did rain slow things down? Very little. Because this is an emergency project, our crews worked through the winter storms rather than waiting them out.

The one-way traffic control: This is the complaint we have heard most, and it is a fair one. The slide took out the EB lane and left us with almost no room to work, so a one-way reversible closure was the only safe way to keep the road open at all while the wall went in.

Where things stand: We paved the EB lane last week and pulled K-rail on 9/8. Guardrail is being installed this week. We expect EB lane to re-open next Monday, 9/21, however we still plan to flag traffic during daytime hours until the remaining work is completed by this fall.
