The park is 98% completed but 100% ready for exploration if you haven’t checked it out. The Borough, with the assistance of the Jenkintown EAC is planning an “official” opening on May 20th to publicly thank everyone who has contributed and provided grants. We have a couple park benches that we are still looking for sponsors for (email [email protected] for details) and keep an eye on this page for fun spring and summer events at the park!!

There has been so much activity at the park!! The seating wall is up, boulders and jumping logs are in, plants and trees are in, and the path is all staked out!!

It has been a long time since there have been any updates on here but so much is going on behind the scenes thanks to our staff at Borough Hall. Construction begins soon and a few of us took a drive today to pick out some awesome boulders that have been donated to the park!! I imagine happy kids of all ages climbing and enjoying them for years to come. We will be forming A Friends of Cedar Street Moretti Park soon so keep an eye on the page if you are interested in getting involved!

Park updates! I’m sorry, I thought I posted this yesterday...

On Thursday, November 14th, PA Governor Thomas Wolf on behalf of PA Senator Art Haywood and State Representative Steve McCarter via the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) awarded Jenkintown Borough $139, 200 for development of the Cedar Street Moretti Park project.

The 2019 Community Conservation Partnerships Program Grant fosters and provides funding for Community Parks, Small Community & Partnerships. This grant funding awarded to Jenkintown Borough is a PA State Grant. Work will include construction of a pedestrian walkway and parking area; installation of a rain garden, butterfly meadow, nature play equipment with required safety surfacing; ADA access, landscaping, project sign and other related site improvements. The Engineered Park Plans were designed and assembled by combining public input from all stakeholders through public meetings, Community Volunteers, Design Professionals from Montgomery County, the Borough Engineer, members of Borough Council and were funded in part by the 2017 PECO Green Region Grant. Construction of the park project is scheduled to be publicly bid in early 2020, with construction of the park to immediately follow the completion of all necessary contracts and document signings.

Current Construction Grant Funds Received for the Cedar Street Moretti Park $314,500
$99,850 - 2019 Montgomery County 2040 Implementation Grant
$75,000 - 2019 Greenways, Trails, Recreation Program (GTRP)
$139,200 - 2019 Community Conservation Partnerships Program (DCNR)

Additional Grants Submitted - Decisions to Award Expected in 2020:
$10,000 - 2019 PECO Green Region Grant - funds would be used to construct a five foot wide, porous paved ADA Accessible walkway that will meander throughout the pocket park, giving access and allowing all to enjoy all the features the park will offer.
$25,000 - 2019 Stanley Smith Charitable Trust - funds would be used to construct the rain garden, ornamental plantings, native plantings and would include educational pieces that would foster community ownership of the park for generations.
$8,000 - 2020 Shade Structure Program - The American Academy of Dermatology’s Shade Structure Program helps to build permanent shade structures at schools, daycares, parks, and other non-profit organizations to cover outdoor areas not protected from the sun. If awarded the funds would be used for a pergola / pavillion shade structure and signage featuring sun-safety tips.
$10,000 - PECO Green Region Open Space Program, 15th Anniversary Bonus Grant. PECO has announced a Bonus Round of Funding to Celebrate 15 years of this successful open space program. If awarded these funds they would be used for shade tree plantings at the park. PECO recognizes the benefits that tree plantings offer communities and their health by filtering out out air and water pollutants, increasing cooling efficiency and storing and absorbing carbon.
