Labor Day means a little more when you know the story of our people.

Here in Appalachia, generations of men went underground into the coal mines, doing dangerous, backbreaking work to put food on the table and keep communities alive.

Coal miners became an important part of America’s labor movement, standing together for safer working conditions, fair wages, reasonable hours, and the dignity of working people. Many sacrificed far more than we realize for things subsequent generations would inherit.

So today, we remember.

We remember the coal miners.
We remember the families waiting at home.
We remember the calloused hands, dirty faces, broken bodies, sacrifice, and strength that helped build these mountains and this country.

In our day, the challenges facing our people have changed. Now, addiction, poverty, isolation, and the loss of opportunity have taken a heavy toll on many of our communities.

But at Springs of Life, we still believe in our people and the place we call home.

We’re not trying to forget the story of Appalachia.

We’re trying to carry it forward.

From sun-scorched places to well-watered communities.

Happy Labor Day from Springs of Life.

Thank you to everyone who participated, including our vendors and community partners. A special thank-you to Nate Smiddy and Kristi Beeler for putting it all together.

Every life has dignity, and no one should walk through addiction, recovery, or grief alone.
