Volunteering is a very cool retirement perk.

Crates terrified the oldest dogs at a small shelter in Missouri. A few of the old dogs shook so hard in one that the volunteers had to pull the van over. And the shelter was moving 3 miles across town to a new building.

There were 64 old dogs to move. The volunteer who runs the walking program asked for one walker per dog, with a notice in the church bulletins and at the senior center. She hoped for 64.

On moving day, 140 retirees were waiting in the parking lot at eight in the morning. Most of them came from the group that walks laps at the mall every day.

They went in pairs, one to hold the leash and one to carry water, and walked the whole 3 miles down Main Street. People stood on their porches to watch. A fire truck crept along at the back of the line in case anybody's knees gave out. One woman made the whole walk with a cane in one hand and an old beagle's leash in the other.

Sherwood retired from the phone company 12 years ago and hadn't had a dog in nine. He drew Barnaby, a shepherd mix with a gray face that had been at the shelter for 19 months. Barnaby had to smell every mailbox post on Main Street. Halfway there, Barnaby lay down in the middle of Main Street and wouldn't get up. Sherwood sat on the curb beside the dog for 10 minutes while the rest of the line walked past and a few people clapped. The walk took him an hour and 40 minutes, and he says he didn't mind one stop.

At the new building, the walkers were supposed to hand over the leash and head home. A lot of them sat down on the new floor with the dog they'd brought instead.

By noon, 38 of the 140 had filled out adoption papers for the dog they'd walked over. Sherwood was one of them.

Barnaby rode home in the front seat of his pickup that afternoon with the window down. The next morning Sherwood and Barnaby walked down Main Street again, slower this time.

Reworld® will make a $15,000 donation, plus an additional $5,000 if 15,000 pounds of e-waste are collected.

Despite the rain and wind, and thanks to YOU, our donors, we collected 73 bicycles and 6 sewing machines on Saturday. These are headed to Guatemala courtesy of our partner 'Pedals for Progress' where they will become family transportation and job creators, as opposed to going into our landfills. With these bikes people can travel 10 miles to a job or 6 miles to a local community school. Many thanks to all of our donors.
We have many projects helping our world, would you like to help? Rotary meets the first 4 Thursdays each month at the Jeffersonville Golf Club at 12 noon for a one hour meeting. Wait until you see what we're doing next month.

One donor drove 1 hour and 45 min to insure his mother's sewing machine stayed out of the landfill.
