Today, June 7, marks an important date in Scouting history and in the history of human space exploration.

On this day in 1965, Gemini IV returned safely to Earth after a nearly four-day mission that included the first American spacewalk. It was a defining achievement in the early days of spaceflight, proving that humans could live and work in orbit.

On June 3, just days earlier, astronaut Edward H. White II became the first American to walk in space during that mission. Command pilot James A. McDivitt supported the flight that made it possible.

Both astronauts had roots in Scouting.

Edward H. White II earned the rank of Second Class Scout.

James A. McDivitt earned the rank of Tenderfoot Scout.

During the mission, White carried a Space Exploration merit badge with him into orbit. That same merit badge is now preserved and on display at the National Scouting Museum at Philmont Scout Ranch, where it continues to inspire Scouts who see it today.

The connection between Scouting and Gemini IV is more than a historical footnote. It reflects a shared foundation of discipline, leadership, and a willingness to step into the unknown.

Exciting news! Catholic Scouting America has awarded fourteen college scholarships to high school seniors and one continuing education scholarship for a total of $40,000! Catholic Scouts are being recognized for their outstanding leadership and commitment to service.

Congratulations to all the scholarship recipients! Keep shining and make a difference.

Catholic Scouting America is the new name used publicly for the National Catholic Committee on Scouting (NCCS).
