Historic Masonic Apron from the Revolutionary Frontier:
A True Piece of American & Indiana Heritage

This rare 18th-century Masonic apron was handmade by Captain Robert George, a Virginia officer who served under General George Rogers Clark during the Illinois Campaign in the Revolutionary War. It features the classic square and compass emblem and dates to his service in the Western theater (late 1770s–early 1780s).

The apron entered the possession of James N. Wood in 1790. Wood went on to found/settle Utica, Indiana in 1794, establishing a key Ohio River ferry crossing that helped open the region to settlement.

In 1949, it was presented to Utica Lodge #337 F. & A.M. by Brother Todd Wood.

This artifact beautifully connects:
• The Revolutionary War in the Northwest Territory
• Early pioneer settlement of Southern Indiana
• The enduring fraternal bonds of Freemasonry on the American frontier

A tangible link from Clark’s campaigns to the founding of Utica and the continuing work of Utica Lodge #337.

Brotherhood, Service, and History preserved.
