Prescription opioid manufacturers have profited off the destruction of families and communities across Indiana. I’m grateful that we’re able to reinvest funds recovered through opioid lawsuit settlements into our community by supporting local organizations focused on prevention, recovery, and prioritizing youth and families. I’m hopeful these investments will make a meaningful difference in supporting the agencies working diligently to address the impacts of opioid addiction throughout Jeffersonville and Clark County.

I would like to give a huge shoutout to the Jeffersonville Redevelopment Commission for stepping up to support the Indiana Small Business Development Center’s Southeast Region. The SBDC provides no-cost, confidential business advising, market research, strategic planning, technical assistance and educational resources to help small businesses in Jeffersonville and throughout our region start, grow and compete.

Today, the Redevelopment Commission voted to invest $8,000 in the SBDC, helping our region meet its required $130k cash match with the U.S. Small Buisness Administration in order to continue providing important resources to small businesses in Jeffersonville, Clark County and throughout Southeast Indiana.

Earlier this year, I sponsored a $15,000 request before the Jeffersonville City Council to support the SBDC through the Council’s Economic Abatement Fund. Several small business owners and community members joined us in advocating for the investment. Although the request fell short of approval, the need did not go away.

In 2025 alone, the SBDC served 71 clients in Jeffersonville, assisted with the launch of five new small businesses and helped Jeffersonville businesses secure $1.47M in capital transactions. Small businesses are a critical part of Jeffersonville’s economy, and ensuring entrepreneurs, including those without generational wealth or power, have access to the tools, expertise and resources they need to succeed strengthens our entire community.

My heart breaks for the family, friends, loved ones and colleagues of Kentucky State Police Trooper Hayden Phillips.

Trooper Phillips’ senseless murder in the line of duty is a painful reminder of the heroic way the men and women of law enforcement put their lives on the line every day to keep our communities safe.

Even though I will always believe there is more good in the world than evil, we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the law enforcement officers who run toward danger every day, not in the interests of oneself, but with a passion for protecting others and keeping our streets, neighborhoods and communities safe.

Rest in peace, Trooper Phillips.

The rapid number of out-of-state investors buying up houses throughout Jeffersonville and turning them into Airbnbs, VRBOs and other short-term rentals is a big concern of mine!

I was proud to be on the front lines taking action on this issue to the fullest extent of Indiana state law back in 2024. The City Council worked closely with the administration and our Planning and Zoning Department to implement new guidelines for non-owner-occupied short-term rentals rapidly popping up across our city, especially around downtown.

Earlier this month, the City Council took action again, voting 9-0 to expand the zone requiring non-owner-occupied short-term rental property managers to apply for a special exception permit through the Board of Zoning Appeals and provide additional documentation. This gives the city more tools to hold owners accountable for noise, trash and property violations.

At a time when rising housing costs are making homeownership more unattainable for our working class, especially young adults, the last thing we want is out-of-state investors buying up available housing in excess and turning them into short-term rentals. As Louisville tightened their own regulations around this issue, many of these investors turned their eye toward Southern Indiana, where our state laws on this issue are very weak.

I want people to come and stay in Jeffersonville, shop at our businesses, eat at our restaurants and enjoy our city. Tourism is a key component of our local economy. But it cannot come at the detriment of the people, taxpayers and schools of Jeffersonville. Each house added to an out-of-state investor’s short-term rental portfolio is one less home available for a family to buy and build a life here.

If this problem is allowed to run rampant, it will hurt our neighborhoods, businesses and schools in the long run. I look forward to working with our state leaders in good faith on this important issue impacting Hoosier cities.

Huge thank you as well to two of our incredible Fire Fighters, Brandon Hopf and Lance Beard for wearing my shirts during the race! Upgrades to Jeffersonville’s aging sewer lines are critical to sustaining the long-term health of our city’s wastewater infrastructure. I applaud the administration and our Wastewater Department for doing what they can to address these issues head-on.

However, when our city undergoes any type of project that will cause significant disruption in the daily lives of residents, we must do a better job of proactive communication that provides credible, timely information that residents can rely on.

These notifications must go beyond simply sending one mailer or one social media post. The fast-paced and saturated information ecosystem we live in now requires cities to work harder to ensure residents are fully informed before, during, and at completion of any major construction project.

I appreciated the chance to speak with Norman Seawright and WLKY News regarding the behind-schedule Park Place sewer line replacement project.

I continue to encourage residents in the area to be diligent in documenting ANY damage to their homes or property in relation to this project. I appreciate Lawyer Excavation addressing these delays directly in a recent statement. While this project has been a total nightmare for neighbors and residents, I look forward to its completion.

I was proud to recently vote NO on a proposal (which unfortunately passed 5-3) before the City Council to rezone a tract of land that gives the green light to build nearly 80 homes next to a property that will constantly be welding, grinding, running heavy machinery, and “breaking things” as they manufacture steel. The other next-door neighbor is an am******on wholesaler that maintains an am******on shed just steps away from where the homes would be built. This will be happening right next to a pond that is private and raises significant liability and safety risk for the children of families that move into these future homes.

Does this sound like the appropriate place to build 80 new $400k homes? The common sense answer would be, NO! This is a nightmare waiting to happen. The future residents will be calling the Code Enforcement Department all day to complain of loud industrial noises, large trucks, and other heavy machinery, etc.

In addition to the obvious issues at hand, this decision is not in line with smart growth. This is dumb growth, where a developer makes money but the people of Jeffersonville suffer. No considerations were made to the current strain impacting nearly every city department, including police, fire, street, sanitation, and parks. We can’t take anymore “growth” until our city departments have the appropriate level of personnel to sustain it.

I’m proud of my consistent voting record on the issue of smart growth. As I’ve made very clear since being on the City Council, Jeffersonville’s growth must be smart and strategic. I look forward to continuing to be a strong voice for responsible development.

JEFFERSONVILLE — Jeffersonville City Council approved an ordinance to rezone a piece of property located on Utica-Sellersburg Road that could pave the way for a new subdivision.

Supporting the next generation of Jeffersonville leaders is critical. I was proud to welcome two interns this summer, Brayden Mayfield and Mason Timberlake. Brayden and Mason are both JHS grads and are beginning their junior years at Indiana State and IU this week!

Over the summer, Brayden and Mason were instrumental in assisting with a variety of tasks, such as responding to and researching constituent issues, assessing conditions in neighborhoods, parks, and more. Brayden and Mason also attended community events with me, including recent Jeffersonville Police and Fire union meetings. In addition to attending events and participating directly in constituent services, Brayden and Mason met individually with small business owners throughout our city to listen to their concerns and identify opportunities to increase cooperation between local businesses and our city.

During their conversations with local business owners, they both became very interested in the issue of homelessness, particularly in our Downtown. The business owners expressed that they would appreciate knowing what services they could direct someone to who may be experiencing homelessness. Brayden and Mason decided to dig deeper into the issue, which led them to set up and attend meetings with Paul Stensrud of Exit Zero, Jim Moon of Catalyst Rescue Mission, and Leslie Townsend-Cronin of the Homeless Coalition of Southern Indiana. They then took it upon themselves to create a flier explaining the different services available locally and how people can access them. They received permission from business owners and placed the fliers in businesses throughout our city.

In addition to all of the important work they did this summer, their insight and the conversations we had further solidified my confidence that the future of our city is so bright. Whether we were discussing housing affordability, workforce development, or issues impacting youth, I deeply valued Brayden and Mason’s perspectives on issues impacting their future.

In early March of this year, a resident reached out and shared concerns about deteriorating sidewalks in Oak Park. After listening to her concerns, I immediately began investigating the issue by making several visits to the neighborhood and personally inspecting the sidewalks. After confirming the problem firsthand, I contacted the appropriate city officials to bring the issue to their attention.

The Engineering Department responded swiftly. Since that initial conversation, nearly $50k in sidewalk improvements have been completed in Oak Park, with more on the way across the city.

I am incredibly grateful to the Engineering Department and our Engineering Management team for their diligence year-round in continuing to enhance Jeffersonville’s infrastructure. Sidewalks are a critical part of quality of life in our neighborhoods, and I remain committed to supporting repairs and improving neighborhood connectivity all across Jeff.
