Rotarians handed out 65 Dictionaries to our 3rd grade students at JISD.
These Dictionaries are used in the classroom with the teachers helping them to learn, states, the constitution, measurement, pledges, vocabulary, plus so much more. The Dictionary is full of all types of information. These dictionaries will be kept at the school and used daily. Then at the end of the year the students are allowed to take them home. Technology is the way now, but old fashion book learning is still a great way to teach.

It’s a new school year and that means more student recognitions from the Rotary Club of Jefferson. September’s Student of the Month was awarded to Kimberly Ball, a Junior at JHS. She is the daughter of Amanda and Daniel Ball and she has three siblings- William, Troy and Jack.
Kimberly takes mostly honors classes and she is a duel credit student in Panola College. She plans to graduate high school with her associates degree. Kimberly is a 4 year member of the Band and is currently the Flute Section Leader. She also played in the Jazz band last year and played the Alto-Saxophone. She is an active member in the student council where she has served as the Class Treasurer for 3 years. Kimberly is also a member of DECA and is planning on signing up for National Technical Honor Society and also the National Honor Society this year.
Kimberly was the winner of the DAR Essay contest in 6th grade, has placed in ready writing and advanced to Regionals. She also placed in copy editing.
Her hobbies include spending time with her friends, watching Crime Documentaries with her mom and reading.
Kimberly’s plan after graduation is to attend Sam Houston University or Northwestern University. She hopes to get her doctorate in Psychology and a Masters in Criminal Justice. She plans to get a job in the police force while attaining her degrees.

The month of August was a busy month for our club! With back to school events, installing new members and having two guest speakers!
We had the privilege of having Officer Mary Temple and her husband Chris Temple join us for lunch and present an awesome program to club members. Officer Temple was so informative on the happenings of the local agency here in Jefferson.
She brought a book with her that she teaches officers from that gets them down on the same level as children. That book “The Rabbit Listened” is a children’s book that is given out by the Dolly Parton Imagination Library that we partner with. Officer Mary talked about how beneficial the book is in helping children who might be involved in accidents, domestic violence, children who need counseling, etc. She works not only for the law enforcement department as an investigator but pulls her time on duty and sees all kinds of situations where our citizens need help. She encouraged us to become active in different ways that we can help her and the department. Things you can donate to the police department that people don’t think about them needing, like old towels. They use them for wrecks and also for moving hurt animals from the roadways, then they throw them away. They keep bottled water in the back of the cars in case they need to hand out water to victims. They use blankets for victims and also stuffed animals for children.
Our club is going to do a collection of these things and you can donate them by calling a Rotary member and we will pick them up. We will also have a drop off box at Edward D Jones office on the corner of Lafayette and Vale. Let’s do our part and support these officers through our donations.

Rotary Club of Jefferson is deeply sadden by the loss of Dolly Parton. Our club partnered with the Dolly Parton Imagination Library a Literacy program in 2012 under President Kathy Murphy. For 15 years we have paid for and sponsored books to the children of Marion County from birth through age 5. Right now we have 159 children signed up that are receiving a book a month from the DPIL organization that are paid for by our club.
We feel honored to have partnered with the incredible lady who started this program and know that in her memory and legacy she leaves, that this program will continue.
If you were a Dolly Parton Fan and would like to contribute in her memory you may make a contribution to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library or to our local club where we will continue to sponsor the children of our county.
Thank you, Dolly for your love and concern for all our children. May there never be one child left behind because of literacy.

Our club welcomed Mr. Steve Archer with the Community Healthcore who presented a program on the opening of the new CORE office at 1113 N Walcott here in Jefferson. Steve told us about the health services which are offered and they include primary care, chronic disease management, psychiatric services, physicals, and more. The clinic is now open on Thursdays, with the possibility of opening more days per week in the future. Families are encouraged to remember to come and try their services. They offer immediate care on Tuesdays and hope to be of service to all people in Marion County.
We are so lucky that they have chosen to be here in Jefferson and we know they will “Serve” our community well.

We are so excited to announce that we installed two new members into our club. Debbie Graves who works at the Marion County Hospital District Indigent Care Office was sponsored by Paulette Cooper. Joining also is Clinton Mathers who is retired from the Law Enforcement department. Clint was sponsored by Gary Hunt.
They are such a great addition to our club and are eagerly volunteering for our service projects.
