on dedicated to preserving and sharing Appalachian history, culture and stories. The sad truth is that the people who know this history, who lived this history, are passing, on a daily basis….and many of their stories of old Appalachia are being forever lost. We think that is a tragedy. We believe that these people and their stories deserve respect, and have value…tremendous value. These stories should be kept alive because although the world is far different today….the information in these stories should never be lost. Our children and their children’s children need to know from whence they came. They need to know their authentic Appalachian heritage…and not the one that is so often frequently and foolishly stereotyped in pop culture. Appalachian Memory Keepers is dedicated to preserving and sharing these stories and memories thru modern media, including film, podcast, photographs, and online articles

Today is the day that the Lord made. Let us rejoice and be glad in it.❤

Can I get an "AMEN?" 🙏

This was originally built by members of the Martin Family in Ashe County and was known as "Martin's Chapel." Today it is known as Brushy Fork Baptist Church. It's Pastor is Jason Miller and he was very helpful and friendly when we asked to film inside. See link to our Martin Family video below 👇

Most folks walk right past this little visitor without giving it a second glance. But this Common Sootywing is one of the many small pollinators that help keep our Appalachian wildflower meadows thriving. 🦋

While it lacks the flashy colors of a monarch or swallowtail, its quick darting flight and tiny white wing patch make it a hidden gem of the mountain summer. Sometimes the smallest creatures are the ones doing some of the biggest work.

In many ways, the humble blackberry patch is a perfect example of Appalachian abundance—a plant that asks for little, thrives on its own, and gives generously in return.

Looking at these blossoms, it's easy to imagine the berries that will soon follow and the generations of mountain folks who watched for that same transformation year after year.

Did you ever pick wild blackberries as a child? And was your favorite reward blackberry cobbler, pie, jam, or just eating them straight from the vine?

One interesting fact: Red-bellied Woodpeckers have expanded their range dramatically over the past century and are now much more common in the Appalachian Mountains than they were in your grandparents' day, making them one of the conservation success stories of eastern North America.
