MARKET POULTRY: While all birds must be owned by June 30th to show at CCYS, you are going to have to acquire most animals way before that in order for them to be the correct age and/or size by this year's show on July 26, 2026:
*Commercial Broad Breasted Turkeys should be somewhere between 14-20 weeks for our County Showcase. That puts 2026 hatch dates for your BBW/BBB poults March 8 to April 19th. New this year to the State Fair is a 4-H & FFA Market Turkey Show, and in speaking to their Superintendent he suggested that while there will be no offical size requirements, it IS a show in which birds should be of market weight and still young and viable, noting that average commercial turkeys are in between 17-20 weeks of age. If you timed it out just right, you could potentially hit our CCYS window and the MO State Fair with a single batch of poults!
*Market Ducks ages are listed in the Fairbook as 6-18 weeks. That makes your Pekin/Meat Duckling hatches March 22 to June 14th this year. However, keep in mind that most processors will only take ducks within certain windows (Ours will do them when they're 7-8 weeks, then won't again until week 12 due to pin-feathering, and if you miss that one too then your next option is to keep feeding them out 'til week 18) so be sure to get your appointment scheduled right! There is a 3.5-4 lbs minimum on Market Ducks for our show.
*Commercial Market Broilers shouldn't be purchased before May 30th so that they can be less than 8 weeks old at the time of the show, but they do also need to meet the required weight minimum of 3 pounds and be as close to ideal market size as you can get them. (Right now, the industry average is going big at 6.5lbs.) The State Fair has no *official* weight or age requirements, but veteran families tell me that it is an Industry judge at the show and he wants that 6-7 week standard Cornish Cross- any older and they're prone to problems. Your CCYS and MO judges alike will also put a lot of emphasis on Uniformity across the Pen of 4, which is why the rules don't list an exact weight to aim for- though past State judges have wanted a 6.5-7.5lb bird.
*Dual Purpose Cockerels, Heritage Turkeys, and Domesticated market Quail all must be under 1 year old according to our rulebook, but there ARE ideal age windows and live weights for processing these birds as well... Reach out to Poultry Superintendent Julia Suess if you want to chat a little more about these newer, non-traditional yet sustainable options for table birds.
