"Physician-scientists are essential to bridging research and patient care. However, these unique professionals face mounting challenges, including unstable funding, prolonged training timelines, limited institutional support, and competing clinical and research demands that threaten the viability of this critical career path."

It was a pleasure to work with Rep. Hruza to get this important patient protection measure passed this session! He and Rep. Smith are true champions for patients!

My bipartisan bill that would require insurance companies to pay for anesthesia services based on the actual time that the patient is under anesthesia rather than based on an estimate as to how long a surgical procedure should take, was added to HB 2472 and passed by the General Assembly last month and is awaiting the Governor's signature. Thank you to Rep. Tyson-Smith for his assistance. Attached is more detail about the bill in the Post-Dispatch.

From the latest edition of MoMed: Integrase Inhibitors: Redefining HIV-1 Treatment and Future Challenges

"The discovery and development of HIV-1 integrase strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) represent one of the remarkable success stories in antiviral drug discovery, transforming fundamental insights of retroviral enzymology into highly effective first-line therapies for HIV-1/AIDS patients. Currently there are five INSTIs approved for clinical use.

The mechanisms of HIV-1 integration, development of integrase inhibitors, structural biology breakthroughs that guided inhibitor optimization and clinical use of INSTIs, their successes and challenges for HIV/1AIDS management are reviewed here."

From the latest edition of MoMed: In Silico Studies of the Hepatitis B Virus Polymerase: Efforts to Identify Novel Drug Binding Sites to Inhibit HBV Replication

"Hepatitis B virus (HBV) replicates via reverse transcription, a reaction catalyzed by the HBV polymerase (P) protein. P is a multidomain protein consists of terminal protein, spacer, reverse transcriptase, and ribonuclease H domains. We used a predicted structural model of HBV P and computationally identified potential non-nucleos(t)ide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) sites. Out of the three potential NNRTI sites, we selected Site 3 for virtual high throughput screening of 837,000 virtual compounds."
