Navy League St. Louis Council

Navy League St. Louis Council The St. The Navy League of the United States was founded in 1902 with the encouragement of President Theodore Roosevelt. and around the world.

Louis Council of the Navy League of the United States is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the active duty and reserve Sea Services: Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Merchant Marine. It is unique among military-oriented associations in that it is a civilian organization dedicated to the education of our citizens, including our elected officials, and the support of the

men and women of the sea services and their families. The objective and purpose of the Navy League is twofold: educational and motivational. We must acquire and display before the citizens of our country information regarding the condition of our naval and maritime forces. We must awaken interest and support in all matters which aid our maritime capabilities. To this end, the Navy League works closely with the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and US-flag Merchant Marine through a network of 265 councils in the U.S. The Navy League has more than 65,000 active members. The Navy League supports America's young people through its youth programs, including sponsorship of the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps and the Navy League Scholarship Program. Individual councils are also involved in promoting youth-oriented activities in their communities such as NJROTC, MCJROTC, and ROTC units along with other recognized youth programs. Local councils and national headquarters provide over $200,000 in scholarships and awards every year. Navy League councils support active duty military personnel through "adoption" of ships, installations, and units; commissioning ceremonies; award programs; and other recognition programs. Over the years, the Navy League has compiled an impressive record of accomplishments. Today the Navy League is widely respected by citizens, community and industrial leaders, and public officials. Navy League programs are welcomed in communities throughout the nation, and members are recognized for their integrity and patriotism.

Great meeting today in Missouri’s capital city, Jefferson City, with Navy League leaders and committed veterans who care deeply about supporting those who serve.

It was a privilege to join Sam Bushman, Cole County Presiding Commissioner and Navy League Midwest Council member; Beth Leake; Ken Gulledge; Ron Brooks; and other Midwest Council members for a meaningful discussion about how we can work together, build relationships, and strengthen support across Missouri.

The Navy League mission is simple, but powerful:

Support members of the Sea Services and their families.
Educate the public on the needs of the Sea Services.
Train our youth to develop good character.
Inform Congress about the needs of the Sea Services.

We also talked about the importance of working with other veterans organizations, local leaders, and community partners to better represent and take care of the less than 1% of Americans who serve in the military.

I am especially looking forward to the 68th Cardinal Company Oath of Enlistment at Busch Stadium on June 25, 2026. What a great opportunity to support and recognize the young Missourians who will raise their right hands and take the oath to serve our nation.

We are also looking ahead to the next USS Jefferson City Submarine Ball in February 2027 in the state capital. The Submarine Ball is a great way to honor service, tradition, and the USS Jefferson City community.

Proud to be part of this effort and grateful for everyone who continues to serve, lead, and support our military community.

Chaim Bloom, President of Baseball Operations for the St. Louis Cardinals presented U.S. Navy Cmdr. Lee Shewmake, Commanding Officer of USS St. Louis (LCS 19), with a team jersey for the ship to display. Bloom, along with other Cardinals’ staff members, visited their city’s namesake ship during Houston Fleet Week ahead of their series against the Astros this weekend. The St. Louis Cardinals have a long-standing history with the Navy including baseball Hall-of-Famer Stan Musial, who left the team in 1945 to serve in the Navy during World War II, and more recently, pitcher Mitch Harris, who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2008, and joined the Cardinals after his service obligation in 2015.

Great day in San Diego Harbor reconnecting with friends and fellow St. Louis natives.

While in town, I had the opportunity to catch up with Commander Derek Strauser. Derek and I go back to our Navy days and have stayed connected through our work at NGA and the Navy League St. Louis Council.

Even better, we were joined by two outstanding young Sailors from St. Louis:

• CTRSN Colin Raines (Navy League Lifetime Member) — currently in transit to USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72)
• ITSA Luke Schrader — serving locally in San Diego

It was special to see multiple generations connected through service — all from St. Louis, all committed to the mission. Commander Strauser shared some great words of mentorship and encouragement with the young Sailors, reinforcing the responsibility and pride that come with wearing the uniform.

We talked about training, readiness, and the mission of the Navy Reserve’s Maritime Expeditionary Security Squadrons (MSRONs), and we were able to watch patrol craft operating in the harbor. The professionalism and coordination of the crews were impressive to see up close.

Moments like this remind me how strong our Navy community is — and how proud I am of the next generation stepping forward to serve.

Fair winds and following seas to MSRON 1, Commander Strauser, and safe transit to USS Abraham Lincoln.

The USS St. Louis (LCS 19) scholarship is an incredible opportunity for past and present Sailors who have served onboard USS St. Louis, as well as their eligible dependents.

The scholarship application period opened on January 1, 2026, and will close on April 15, 2026. This is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of financial assistance for college expenses.

Please share this information with your families and any former shipmates who previously served onboard USS St. Louis!
