Every day, policymakers make decisions that affect the practice of architecture and the built environment. No matter the kind of work you perform and where you perform it, decisions made from Washington, DC to your state capitol to city hall affect you.

But today, fewer than one in three AIA members have ever met with their elected representatives. Few architects serve on the boards and committees that directly affect the built environment in their communities. As a result, we’re losing influence - and the ability to shape our futures.

It’s up to all AIA members to make sure their voice is heard, which is what advocacy is all about. That is why 2015 is the Year of the Advocate at the AIA.

The jury found this project to be provocative. Formal Simplicity enters an interesting dialogue with the existing house; a very refined interior space with a crisp palette of details. The introspective nature of the project and its courtyard is poetic.

EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT CENTER
Springfield, MO

Architect: Bates & Associates, Architects
Owner: Springfield R-12 Public School District
Photographer: Gayle Babcock
Award: 2012 AIA Springfield Public Recognition Award

This project is a renovation of a vacated grocery store into an Early Childhood Development Center.

The goal for the Center was to integrate the existing counseling and early childhood programs for Springfield Public Schools.
With this well-planned layout, Bates & Associates was able to create an environment that celebrates the child. It speaks to the child as a relaxed, safe, fun, developmentally appropriate, and highly efficient facility. The color plate and playful forms allow flexibility for changing programs in spaces that reinforce the self esteem of the children, staff, and visitors.

O.H. DEAN BUILDING RENOVATION
Kansas City, MO

Architect: Helix Architecture + Design
Owner: Ted G. Wiedeman
Award: 2011 AIA Kansas City Design Excellence Citation Award

The renovation of this 14,000-square-foot, two-story structure created a new store and corporate headquarters for a plumbing-supply wholesaler moving from a suburban location into the urban core of Kansas City. The concept behind the renovation was to celebrate the company’s trade with a variety of copper-clad surfaces – from the entry vestibule and elevator shaft, to the exterior balcony and transaction counter top. Wanting to remain involved in the daily rhythm of the retail space, the company’s executives work above the showroom and remain connected to clients through an opening that also brings daylight into the retail space from the skylight above.

The glazed terra-cotta west facade was restored to include the original building medallion, which was re-cast by local artisans to match historic specifications. A number of sustainable features (including the urban site, use of daylight and a green wall on the building’s south facade) were used to achieve LEED Gold certification.
