Breakfast Rotary Club Presents on Peacebuilding.
As America approaches its 250th anniversary, an important question arises: Have we become better at making peace over the past 250 years?
Many of our museums, monuments, and reenactments focus on wars, battles, and weapons. While these honor important chapters of history, they often overshadow those who prevented conflicts and saved lives through diplomacy and peacemaking.
Rotary International helped support the formation of the United Nations and continues to promote peace worldwide. Yet there are only a few museums dedicated specifically to peace, including those in Dayton, Ohio, Hiroshima, Japan, and Spain.
Perhaps the real question is this: Do we build too many monuments to those who take lives and not enough to those who save them? As we commemorate our nation's 250th birthday, we should also celebrate the peacemakers whose leadership, courage, and vision have helped shape a better world.
