77.4% of the firefighter-in-distress incidents declared a Mayday.

That means nearly one out of every four FID incidents happened without a Mayday being transmitted.

That raises an important question for the fire service: Are firefighters recognizing the emergency early enough, and are they comfortable calling the Mayday before conditions get worse?

A Mayday is not an admission of failure. It is a tool used to get resources moving, and give command a clear picture of what is happening.

FEMA is making $648M available to help firefighters and first responders nationwide get the equipment, staffing and support they need to protect lives and communities. The funding includes:

• $291.6M for equipment, vehicles, PPE and responder wellness
• $324M to help departments hire, recruit and retain firefighters
• $32.4M for fire prevention and firefighter safety research
