This page serves as a resource for information about volunteer Stream Team activities and stream issues, while engaging citizens in promoting stewardship and enjoyment of Missouri's streams. Missouri Stream Team's page is an open forum where anyone with an interest in water resources can share information, ask advice or express responsible, respectful opinions. We encourage discussion and

questions regarding stream issues, Stream Team events, and volunteer accomplishments; however, please keep the following Comment Policy in mind when posting:

Wondering how you can celebrate Missouri’s wildlife? Try doing a litter pickup, the wildlife will thank you!

To celebrate National Wildlife Day, take a few minutes to collect some litter. It doesn’t take a lot to make an impact! Try taking a friend to a local stream or park and pick up some litter. And don’t forget to submit an activity report for your effort. Even the smallest litter pickup helps wildlife! Share your favorite safe and respectful wildlife encounter while in the field with us in the comments!

We've updated our tree seedling ordering process this year and the ordering window ends tomorrow, August 31st! If you miss this window, you will not be able to order your free tree seedlings until February 2027, and inventory may be more limited at that time.

Tonight is International Bat Night! This annual observance puts bats in the spotlight, raising awareness on their conservation status and importance in ecosystems. Did you know that there are 14 species of bats found in Missouri, with 3 more species visiting the state occasionally? Out of these species, 13 are of conservation concern.

How do Stream Teamers help protect bats? Well, by keeping our waters healthy – through litter pickups, water quality monitoring, and riparian corridor restoration – we keep pollution out of the underground habitats that bats frequent.

Bats also love to eat the macroinvertebrates that we monitor. Many of the nymphs and larvae that we see in our streams may find themselves preyed upon by bats when they become adults!

In fact, this cartoon black fly looks like it’s about to become a bat meal!

Today is National Dog Day!

Some of our volunteers play a different role during Stream Team events. They may not have opposable thumbs, they may not speak any human language, and they may be furry all over, but they’re fantastic helpers and great moral support! We appreciate these special volunteers and their owners. We especially love to see them hard at work in the photos attached to the activity reports we receive, such as the photo above. Make sure to show some love to the dogs on your Stream Team today!

Nothing’s more satisfying than taking in the view of the trash haul after your litter pickup! We love to see the amazing impacts made by our Stream Team volunteers. Don’t forget to share your successes with us by submitting activity reports! With activity reports from across the state, we’re able to see the full scope of Stream Team’s efforts. So, no matter how big or small your activity was, send it in!

This week is World Water Week! The theme this year is “Water for People and Progress.” World Water Week is an annual conference held by the nonprofit Stockholm International Water Institute both online and in Sweden. The event brings together governments, nonprofits, businesses, and scientists to advance solutions in water access for people across the globe.

Did you know that the largest source of drinking water for Missourians is the Missouri River? That’s one of the many reasons why the work we do at Stream Team is important – by keeping our streams and rivers healthy, we keep Missourians healthy, too.

Thank you for joining us at the first Black River Aftermath Clean Up, especially given the heat and humidity. We’ve added some photos from that long day spent restoring the Black River, its floodplain, and supporting the people who rely on it. The teams pictured are 4165, 4025, 2383, 1028, 95, and 211.

At this event, while we are still finalizing the numbers, we collected over 70 cubic yards of landfill trash, 30 cubic yards of scrap metal, 54 tires, and many personal items we hope to return to their owners.

There is still a lot to do to restore this Missouri gem to its former state, and unfortunately, it will take years.

With cooler days coming, we’ve set the next clean-up for October 17. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us for Black River Aftermath Clean Up Part II. We’re still working out the details, so check our Calendar of Events and watch for a StreamGram with more information soon.
