Last fall, after Homecoming, Amber Lemoine reached out to donate this historic artwork to the community center. I asked the Historic Commission if we showed host a showcase when we get ready to display it. Some of the members thought it might be a good way to commemorate America’s 250 celebration on the 4th of July, as well as showcasing the project we have been working on for a couple of years. Shirley Long had seen an interesting tour in Fredericksburg of their school history and thought we should preserve ours in Kent County as well. For years we have been collecting oral histories from members of our community that have memories that go way back. We began asking other community members if they would join in the 4th of July celebration to make it fun. The Nursing Home already has a great Independence Day celebration established. The Lions club, school, church’s, EMS, and many others got on board with the idea in a big way. I really didn’t want to put my name on it because communication is certainly not my strong suit! Some people who never really heard me talk much saw me come out of my shell and nerd out over the last couple of months and probably thought it’s best I keep quiet! Others stepped up and met my short-comings by teaching me communication and organizational skills. I would like to thank many individuals here for their encouragement and support here, but I am afraid I would forget or leave out someone important. I don’t even know whose idea it was to have trash cans placed around the square. So, I will just say everyone needs to come out and celebrate with us and see for yourself everyone who is working a booth or displaying a showcase to whom I owe a great debt of gratitude! It’s going to be a whole lot of fun and we can just give the glory to God because it was certainly not all my doing at all. Surely our Father wants us all to lay down political and religious differences and hurts from the past so that we can celebrate together in unity!
