Stumbled upon this deeply moving exhibit at the Chief Vann house in Chatsworth. The display features the story of David and Delilah McNair’s gravestone. In 1839, the grieving McNair family paid Irish stonemason Henry Fitzsimmons—who famously settled in Pickens County, Georgia, in the mid-1830s and was a pioneer in the marble industry, $150 to carve the monument from stunning Georgia Marble.
It’s incredible to think of the enduring legacy tied right back to our local roots through craftsmen like Fitzsimmons and the timeless beauty of Georgia Marble. History lives all around us if we take a moment to look!

Our next meeting will be a very informative meeting about the history of Tate Mountain Resort championship golf course that was played by the great Bobby Jones. Thursday July 30th beginning at 6:30 at Pendley Creek Brewery on Main Street. Hope to see you there!!

Our next public meeting is a little earlier than normal due to our speakers school schedule. Our meeting will be Thursday July, 30th. beginning at 6:30 at Pendley Creek Brewing Company. Hope to see you there for what will be a great and informative meeting about the Tate Mountain resort Championship golf course. This 9 hole golf course was home to several tournaments and was played by the Great Bobby Jones many times.

You never know who comes through our Old Jail/Cabin campus. Today we had a distant descendant of Henry Fitzsimmons visiting from out west with his family.

For those that don’t know….

Henry Fitzsimmons….
Came to America from Ireland 1819. He was the first man to introduce the sale of Georgia Marble on the present site of the Georgia Marble.
