Happy May from the Jasper German Club! 🌸🇩🇪

As we welcome a new month, we’re celebrating a beautiful German tradition—the Maibaum (Maypole)! Found in towns and villages across Germany, especially in Bavaria, the Maypole is a symbol of spring, community, and new beginnings.

🌼 Fun Facts about the Maibaum:
• Traditionally raised on May 1st with music, food, and festivities
• Decorated with colorful ribbons, wreaths, and handcrafted village symbols
• Often painted in the classic blue and white colors of Bavaria
• In some regions, there’s even friendly “Maypole stealing” between neighboring towns!

You may have even seen—or driven by—our own local Maypole right here at 6th & Newton Streets in Jasper! It’s a special way we keep this tradition alive in our community.

The raising of the Maibaum brings people together to celebrate the season, just as we do here in Jasper. Wishing everyone a joyful, festive, and blooming May! 🌷

Indiana German Heritage Society held their annual meeting and Symposium in Jasper Indiana. The attendees learned about Jasper's German Heritage. Presentations about the impact that Father Kundeck had on Dubois and surrounding counties, the Ferdinand German Christmas Pyramid, the Jasper Pfaffenweiler Sister City program, the making the May Pole, Mural and Glockenspiel, the German Events at Jasper Strassenfest and the history behind the Schaefer Barn and Alexander School House.

Then the group was treated to children performing on the Glockenspiel, and a tour of the Mill, Train Depot, Schaefer Barn and Alexander School and Dubois County Museum. Of course, they passed the May Pole and Mural several times.

Thanks to Mary Leah Siegel, Sister City Board, Jasper Deutscher Verein Officers, Patti Goepfrich and IGHS members for organizing this great event.

What a great honor to host IGHS in Jasper Indiana.

This Veterans Day, the Jasper German Club would like to recognize and thank all those who have served our country. We are especially grateful to our members who have proudly worn the uniform. Your dedication and sacrifice are deeply appreciated.
