Last week, the Southeastern Trust crew spent time at our Bald Mountain Creek Nature Park in Yancey County, North Carolina. During this trip, we met a team from North Carolina State studying Golden-winged Warblers, a member of Warren Wilson College researching crayfish and other local biologists eager to explore our park and it's incredible biodiversity. We also spent time working on trails, cleaning up downed trees, and getting projects ready for future efforts. What a great place to hike, boulder, and enjoy nature!

This week's "What's Bloomin'" spotlight is on the Pale, or Yellow Jewelweed, a less common cousin of the familiar Orange Jewelweed often found growing in sunny, wet areas across many of our parks. Discovered during a visit to Bald Mountain Creek Nature Park, this valuable pollinator plant was buzzing with life, drawing a diverse array of insects and birds to its cheerful yellow blossoms.

This week’s “Feathered Find” features a species most commonly found across the northern United States and Canada. The Chestnut-sided Warbler, including the male pictured above, also thrives in higher-elevation habitats, such as the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina.

During a recent visit to our Bald Mountain Creek Nature Park in Yancey County, North Carolina, the Southeastern Trust team was delighted to encounter numerous Chestnut-sided Warblers filling the forest with their distinctive “pleased, pleased, pleased to meetcha” songs.

Did you know that Georgia is home to not one, but two species of scorpion? This week’s “Critter of the Week” is the Southern Devil Scorpion, Vaejovis carolinianus. Although both Georgian species are venomous, neither poses a serious threat to humans. These fascinating arachnids are most often found sheltering beneath loose tree bark or hiding under logs and stones. As with all scorpions, this species can easily be found using blacklights due to the fluorescence of the exoskeleton!

This week’s “What’s Bloomin’” spotlight features the Mountain Laurel, a native evergreen shrub found throughout Georgia and across much of the Eastern United States. Known for its glossy year-round foliage and striking clusters of pink and white blooms in spring, Mountain Laurel is a favorite in cultivated gardens while also thriving naturally in higher-elevation forested areas. One of its most fascinating traits is its unique ability to “launch” pollen onto visiting bees, butterflies, and other insects, helping increase its chances of successful pollination.

If you catch yourself gazing up into the treetops this spring or summer, following the songs of a small, energetic bird creeping along the branches, you may have just spotted this week’s “Feathered Find”, the Yellow-throated Warbler. With its striking plumage, this lively songbird returns each spring to Georgia and neighboring states, where it favors pine forests and wooded areas near streams and rivers.

Though considered rare within its Georgia range, this week’s ‘What’s Bloomin’’ segment highlights the distinctive Virginia bluebell. This mid-spring ephemeral is easily recognized by its bell-shaped, sky-blue flowers and its tendency to form large colonies in moist, low woodland areas.
