Prayer offers a rich connection to our spiritual lives, nurturing our relationships and faith. It also provides comfort in times of crisis or need. Join us as we pray for families, families of the fallen, first responders, our military, and our government. We can pray that our world leaders would be given wisdom, protection, and effective leadership during this time.

Shappell was 1 year old when her father, George Yates, gave his life fighting for worldwide freedom in World War II. He was killed in action in Italy on Dec. 9, 1943, as a member of the U.S. National Guard. He was among the first American troops to fight in the European theater.

Shappell smiled as she held the flag, draped across her arms. Her dad’s picture and his Purple Heart commendation were displayed on a table nearby.

“I felt honored that they would find me and do that for my dad,” she said.

The flag has stood with our Army in every major conflict. Both Old Glory and our Soldiers represent the resolve, sacrifice and strength of our Nation.

National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day: This day, observed on April 9th, is dedicated to honoring and acknowledging the sacrifices, courage, and resilience of those who endured captivity as prisoners of war during wartime.

"Former" POWs: This term refers to individuals who were once held captive as prisoners of war but have since been freed and returned to their home countries or are no longer in captivity.

April 9th was officially designated by Congress in 1988 as a Presidentially-proclaimed observance. It commemorates the April 9, 1942, surrender of U.S. and Filipino forces on the Bataan Peninsula, when the largest number of U.S. Forces were captured by Japanese troops.

We take the time to honor and remember those who have sacrificed for their country as prisoners of war, those missing in action, and their families. We will never forget the sacrifices made by our former POWs.
