Walker County ARES

Walker County ARES Walker Co ARES is a volunteer group of Amateur Radio Operators (Hams) that provide communications in the event of disasters.

We work directly with the Walker Co 911, Red Cross and other served agencies using protocalls set by the ARRL. We are part of a national organization that provide communication's during diasasters, public events and for organizations needing our service. There are no dues, all that is required is; you have to have your Amateur Radio license, list your information, so we know who you are, and list

your contact information, in the event of an emergency where ARES is needed to assist one or more of our served agencies. It is not that hard to become a licensed Amateur Radio Operator. Additionally, you will find friendly hams willing to help you along the way...

Our March meeting Saturday was almost a packed house with 33 people. Among those attending were members of the Cullman Amateur Radio Club. Jason Hunter, KC4LOS, from Cullman, spoke to the group concerning equipment he has to link repeaters and their interest in working with us and Blount Co Amateur Club in the future. Mike Knowles, KE4SAG, spoke to the group about Project Lifesaver, a project used to keep track of family members who may have dementia, children who are autistic or anyone who has the potential of wandering from home. This program uses radio frequencies to track and locate those individuals. After the meeting, four people took their Amateur Radio license exam. Rodi Cooper, Celia Rainey and Caleb Rutledge passed the Technician class exam and Andrew League who passed his Technician license last month upgraded and passed the General Class Exam. Congratulations to them for successfully getting their Amateur Radio License!
