SABBA Tournament Report - by Melvin Dunn

I wanted to share a recap and some exciting highlights from the S.A.B.B.A. 2026 Mega Bucks tournament, which took place at Lake Ferguson in Greenville, Mississippi. This remarkable lake, a 1,400 acre oxbow formed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, stretches a full ten miles and proved to be an incredible host for the event. The top prize each day was an impressive $9,000 awarded to the team with the heaviest five-fish stringer.

Leading up to the tournament, various trails fished Ferguson and reported impressive five-fish limits from 18-20+ pound sacks, with practice reports described as absolutely “INSANE.” Lake levels hovered around 22-24 feet, water temperatures ranged from 76 to 82 degrees, and bass were being caught in every stage: pre-spawn, spawn, and post-spawn. Anglers were pulling in 5-6lb bass all over the oxbow. The pre-tournament meeting buzzed with excitement, and late registration saw a line of eager competitors, a sure sign the lake was fishing exceptionally well.

Day 1 kicked off with a prayer and a thrilling blast off, with teams departing in numerical order. By the afternoon, the fairgrounds were alive with family, friends, and community members as teams brought their catches to the scales. Master of Ceremony Jim Austin emceed the weigh-ins, fueling the crowd’s excitement as several teams weighed in sacks between 14 and 17 pounds. When local bass hammers Eddie and Quentel Gibson dropped 18.57 pounds on the scales, cheers erupted. The excitement peaked as Hawkins and Hawkins weighed in a massive 22.36lb sack, capturing Day 1 honors and the $9,000 top prize.

Day 2 saw all official weights reset, and intense competition resumed. Team Hawkins set an early benchmark at 14.63lbs, but Arrington and Wells soon brought 15.20lbs, Johnson and Leggett landed 15.36lbs, and Lasiter briefly took the lead with 16.01lbs. Perkins and Johnson upped the ante with a 19.15lb sack, but it was Cunningham and Portee, weighing in a spectacular 22.37lb stringer, who clinched the Day 2 honors and another $9,000 prize.

A special shout out goes to S.A.B.B.A. for organizing such a fantastic, family-friendly event, and to Eddie and Quentel Gibson, as well as the Greenville community, for their outstanding support. The Calcutta/side pot, which combines the weights from both days, paid out a whopping $14,000 this year! When you tally it all up—$9,000 each day plus the $14,000 side pot—the total payout was $32,000.

As Jim Austin eloquently put it, “Where can you fish as a weekend warrior and make that kind of money? Nowhere!” For those looking to compete in 2027, remember your blast off number is tied to your registration number, so register early when the tournament director announces the date. Official results are posted .LIVE.

In closing, saving just $10 a week for a year would have covered the entry fee for the 2026 tournament and give you a shot at the $18,000 official payout and the $14,000 side pot. Hoping for a 100-boat field in 2027—come on, y’all! See you soon.

Best regards,
Melvin

FTBC,

I wanted to take a moment to share a recap of the recent Quad State Affiliate Team Tournament, hosted by the Fishing Tradition Bass Club at the beautiful Lake Bob Sandlin. For those unfamiliar, Bob Sandlin is a 9,000-acre reservoir nestled in Northeast Texas near Pittsburg, renowned for its exceptional bass and catfish fishing, as well as boating opportunities. The lake stretches across 75 miles of scenic shoreline and reaches a maximum depth of 65 feet. It’s a body of water with a storied history—currently boasting a largemouth bass record of 14.31 lbs from 1990 and an impressive 11.30 lb fish caught as recently as 2019. With fishing potential like that, it’s no wonder teams were eager to experience the lake firsthand.

In the days before the tournament, anglers enjoyed excellent pretournament practice sessions. Many reported finding fish in all three stages of the spawn, and the weather leading up to the big day was classic springtime perfection, with temperatures ranging from the high 60s to the mid-80s and gentle breezes at 5-15 mph. Of course, as any seasoned angler knows, tournament day tends to bring surprises! That morning, competitors were greeted by a brisk north wind sustained at 15-20 mph, with gusts pushing up to 25 mph.

Given these challenging conditions, the tournament director and leadership from the various clubs convened for a dockside meeting to prioritize angler safety and discuss trailering options. After careful consideration, the decision was made to proceed, allowing everyone to hit the water and put their skills to the test.

As the day progressed, the wind kept things interesting, but true to form, it seemed to finally calm down just as the clock struck 2:45pm before lines in at 3pm! Many teams reported productive outings, with several culling their catches three to four times throughout the event.

When the final weights were tallied, it was Arthur Seals and his fishing partner who emerged victorious, taking both the winning sack and big bass honors. Here are the impressive weights for the top five teams:

1st – 18.98 lbs

2nd – 16.73 lbs

3rd – 15.02 lbs

4th – 14.78 lbs

5th – 11.72 lbs

A special note of appreciation is due to the leadership teams for their commitment to safety, demonstrated by the pretournament dockside discussion. Angler safety is always our top priority, and their careful deliberation ensured everyone could compete confidently and responsibly. Hats off as well to all the teams—every single angler was in the water a full 30 minutes before the official blast-off, showcasing the excitement and dedication that define our tournament community.

Let’s not forget, the passion and preparation in our group are truly remarkable. With boats ranging from 18 to 22 feet in length, our electronics investments between $1,500 and $7,500, and another $2,000 to $3,000 spent on rods, lines, and lures, it’s clear we’re every bit as committed as the pros we see on TV. What sets us apart is not just our love for fishing, most of us still work 40 hours a week and we still drive ourselves to challenge the elements, compete with fellow anglers, and above all, pit our skills against the fish themselves.

We are bass tournament anglers—not just fishermen. There’s a real difference, and I couldn’t be prouder to stand alongside such a passionate group.

Sincerely,

1DAYPRO
