A Step Above - End the Stigma

The hardest part about being a mental health advocate is not knowing when to step up, but knowing when it’s best to walk away. It is with a heavy heart that I’m announcing that I have decided to step down as president and will be transferring ownership to my Vice President Tara Fullington-Jones.

I am by no means suicidal but I would be a liar to say I’m doing well. I have been going through some major life changes and have relapsed on alcohol in the process.

I ask that you continue to support the team for they each have a story to tell and are perfectly capable of carrying on the mission, I ask that you don’t see my story as there is no hope because there is always hope as long as you keep trying, and most importantly I ask that you don’t take this as a goodbye for I’m not saying this is the end…..I’m simply writing a new chapter. Love you all!!!!

We had the pleasure of going to The Dove House today and spending some time with the wonderful women there! We got them each some fuzzy socks, an inspirational calendar, and a journal to help them through this time away from their loved ones.
Remember, a lot of times, small acts of kindness can make the biggest impact on someone’s life!
Happy New Year everyone!!! We have a lot of big and exciting plans for 2023!!!

Got to listen to the story of our Vice President last night and what and inspiration! They had many more things to offer at the event last night such as narcan training, 20+ vendors to talk to, there was easily 100+ photos at their memory table, and the first speaker Larry Warren was also an inspiration. Just so happens that he attends a CR program up in the Orange County area. So we exchanged contact info so I could help him get his testimony to other areas to the best of my ability.

At A Step Above we believe that it’s very important to get as many men involved with su***de awareness as possible. Simply because it is men who are less likely to talk about what is going through their heads. One of the first things we arranged was sponsoring a men’s softball team this summer and they were happy to help us get the name out there!! If you’re interested in watching softball be sure to support our team. It is Rosie’s or number 4 on the schedule!! Games are located behind Gudorf Supply in Jasper!!

I just want to point out that this is the guy that found me on the edge of my driveway the day I tried to take my life. He didn’t do it because he had to, but him and his wife to be are simply amazing and good hearted people. Be sure to thank our newest officer next chance you get!!

At tonight’s City Council meeting Jasper’s newest officer, Nick Goller, was sworn in. Congratulations!

Got some exciting news!! We don’t have one but two events this weekend that will give you the opportunity to meet up and get to know us. The first event will be hosted by Dubois County Pride this Friday and the second will be the Summer Wellness Bash hosted by LifeSpring Health Systems this Saturday. Both events will be located at Jaycee Park. Hope to see you there!!

We are so very excited this year to have Nathan Schmitt Chief of Police with the Jasper Police Department will be joining us for the opening of this years event on August 20th at Venue 1408 in Huntingburg doors will open at 4pm est.

Hey everyone I know it’s late but I figured I feel well enough to give an update. I was in the hospital for two nights altogether and came home on Saturday. It appears that I’m going be off work for a while mainly because of how little energy I have. I’m on a strict liquid diet and have already lost 20 pounds in one week. I’m probably not going to be very active on here for a while either but if you need anything feel free to message us and one of us will do what we can to help to get the help you need.

I’m very thankful for my team for taking care of things while I have been MIA. I feel like under most circumstances I would be concerned but I know I have one heck of an awesome team that have just as much passion about helping others as I do!! I also want to mention how thankful I am for my wife. If she wasn’t in my life during times like these I would definitely be struggling to say the least. I also want to thank all of you for being patient with us and continuing to support us every day. We can say and do all we want but it means nothing if we don’t t have a crowd to follow and listen. So again thank you and love you all!!

The way things are looking I’m going to guess it will be early to mid July before I can get back up and running. Please continue to have faith in us and our mission because we are definitely working on some big things that will be taking off before you know it!! Hope you all have a fun and safe weekend.
