Good afternoon from the KPB Community Corner! Here’s a little lesson in soil building and why we use lasagne-style layering rather than tilling.
The grass is growing and is going to seed thanks to this incredible weather, so i did a little pulling to start my day before getting onto the computer. This corner around one of our raised beds is a prime example of successful soil building.
The Teen Squad built the first raised bed last summer on the gravel parking lot so this is what has happened in less than a year. We didn’t add any soil on the ground around the beds. I added that mulch about two months ago. All the soil you see was ‘built’ by the plants, the mulch composting down, the weather, and the bugs.
Check out that soil! It’s so rich!! Just leaving it to do its thing for a while… clover, dandelion, and grasses were allowed to grow. We don’t spray anything in our gardens except for water so the critters and microorganisms could thrive. You can see the gravel mixed into the new soil where i pulled the grass. And that corner is filled with worms, rollie-pollies, ants, grubs, and more.
If the grasses growing are beneficial, why did i pull it? Because we want to reduce the competition for better plants like plantain, clover, dandelion, and check out the creeping thyme making its move into the area!
Nature doing its thing! 🌱🐛🐜☀️🌼😁👍
