Have you ever wondered why the Maltese Cross is so closely associated with the fire service?
The cross traces its history to the Knights Hospitaller, later associated with Malta. During the Crusades, these knights became known for aiding the sick and injured. Tradition also connects them with protecting fellow knights from fire and burning liquids used during battle.
Over the centuries, the eight-pointed Maltese Cross became associated with courage, service and helping others in danger.
The American fire service later adopted cross-shaped emblems inspired by this tradition. Today, variations of the Maltese Cross are seen throughout the fire service on department patches, badges, apparatus and memorials.
For firefighters, it has come to represent values that remain at the heart of the fire service:
Courage • Honor • Service • Sacrifice
