đźš« DRONES AND WILDFIRES DO NOT MIX đźš«

Today, we had another drone incursion on a wildfire in Elko County. A drone was spotted flying over the Secret Pass Fire during active fire suppression operations.

When a drone goes up, our firefighting aircraft have to come down.

That means helicopters and air tankers cannot safely support crews on the ground—putting firefighters, homes, ranches, and nearby communities at greater risk.

Your drone footage is not worth someone’s life or property.

If you see someone flying a drone near an active incident, please contact law enforcement or fire officials immediately and help us identify the operator.

If you fly, we can’t.

Major Vehicle Accident – Highway 93, Mile Marker 79, North of Wells
July 20, 2026, at 11:39 a.m.

Elko County Fire, Wells Fire, Jackpot Fire and EMS, MedX Ground, Elko County Ambulance, and multiple aviation assets are on scene or responding to a multi-vehicle, head-on collision.

Eight patients are reported to be involved.

NDOT and Nevada State Police are closing northbound traffic at Wells. Southbound traffic is recommended to stop in Jackpot and avoid traveling toward the incident.

Expect long delays. Please avoid the area and allow emergency responders room to work.

If you fly, we can’t.

Yesterday at the Wells Airport, two Single Engine Air Tankers were returning from working fires for our neighbors when a drone was reported flying around the tanker base.

Let’s be clear: drones do not belong around airports, tanker bases, or firefighting operations.

That includes aircraft reloading, repositioning, or returning to base. If your drone is up, our aircraft may have to stay down.

We like aviation. We like drones. We do not like grounding firefighting aircraft because someone wanted a better view.

The U.S. Wildland Fire Service, Nevada Division of Forestry, and your city and county fire departments are happy to show you the equipment up close — when we are not using it to fight fire.

Fly smart. Stay away from airports and fire operations.
