Today is Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

One of our VFW Auxiliary Life Members, Anita Loando Acohido of Auxiliary 2875 in Honolulu, was interviewed by Pacific Historic Parks as part of their "VFW Oral History" initiative in which she talked about her experiences as a nine-year-old witness to the attack. She didn't initially recognize that she was seeing enemy planes approaching, but her brother ordered her inside the house, shouting "those are Japanese planes and they're shooting!"

Loando Acohido also talks about her family members who served, her continued commitment to helping veterans, what it means for a family to finally find closure upon the return of a love one's remains and the importance of parents and teachers in educating children about America's history and the memories that have stayed with her since that "date which will live in infamy," December 7, 1941.

Loando Acohido is currently serving as Department of Hawaii Chaplain and Department Historian, and she previously served as Department President ( 2022-2023; 2012-2013) and as National Historian and Media Relations Ambassador (2019-2020).
