The New School, Syracuse

The New School, Syracuse A private, independent K-8, guiding children’s development toward a lifelong enthusiasm for learning, active citizenship, and skillful decision-making.

The New School is a small, independent and not-for-profit K-8, established in 1988 by parents and educators affiliated with Syracuse University to guide children’s development toward a lifelong enthusiasm for learning, active citizenship, and skillful decision-making. We recognize that children learn best in a community where they know they are valued. Parents and family members are active partici

pants in their child’s learning, and in the life of the school. History of the School and Philosophical Roots:

The New School was founded by educators and families in 1988. Its predecessor was the Syracuse Institute for Enabling Education, an alternative elementary school in Syracuse from 1970-1986, started by Robert Newman, professor in the School of Education at Syracuse University. Both schools were influenced by the theories of Dewey, Piaget, Vygotsky, and Rogers. The school began with 12 children and has remained a small (around 30 students), intimate, family like setting. Parents wanted to create a school in which curriculum design starts with observation of the individual child. Founding families also recognized the value of children’s learning from and collaborating with peers; the program is structured to engender mentoring, negotiating, exploring ideas and materials together and communicating constructively. Teachers and students are partners in school life; teachers constantly mine children’s thinking and ideas to develop the next steps in their learning cycle.

Yet another sweet and meaningful tradition at our school. At the end of each year children pull a name out of a hat and secretly make a gift for that child. They have to think deeply about this child and match the gift they make to their interest. For example one child made a marble run out of cardboard, complete with a marble for their child! On one of the last days of school, the whole school sits in a circle and each child presents their gift and a letter of appreciation to their gift partner.

A tradition over 20 years in the making! Teddy Bear Picnic! All 29 children said they wanted to participate - ages 5 through 13! That says a lot about our school. Kids can stay kids! There is no rush to be cool! Just like the nursery rhyme says the teddy bears/stuffies get to gad about and play hide and seek, and there is lots of delicious food to eat!

Our final field trip of the year - a visit to the Executive Branch! We were given a fascinating tour of City Hall and then spent half an hour with Mayor Sharon Owens, who graciously answered the children's questions. They learned a lot, but some of the things were: there is a 20 million gap between revenue and expenses this year, a new firetruck cost $3 million, how a passion can turn into a job that you dont expect. The hardest thing about being Mayor is sitting in hospitals and holding the hands of parents with children who have been hurt. You can't be Mayor unless you love the city and all its people. Mayor Owens demonstrated how much she cares about Syracuse and its people.

Our older students have been studying of the Constitution and the Three Branches of Government. We visited the Legislative Branch in April and met with Common Councilors Corey Williams and Rita Paniagua. In early May we visited the Judicial Branch and had an amazing tour of the County Court House conducted by Erin Kovasky. We were all impressed by their amazing collection of law books and loved learning about all the different parts of the Court House.

This week the whole school took part in a mock trial, based on the 1969 Supreme Court Tinkers versus Des Moines School District case. The oldest students were assigned roles, and prepared arguments for the prosecution and defense in this landmark case where the first amendment right was front and center. The youngest students were the jury! Everyone did a terrific job of arguing for and against the Tinker's right to wear black arm bands on school grounds.

Over 20 years of rocket launches makes for a tradition! Always exciting. Children love to watch their rockets disappear into the clouds and then wait to see where it lands; sadly sometimes in the woods, but most times within running distance. As always the oldest children designed and created their own unique rockets. Thank you to Dan Clausen, Teddy's Dad, for volunteering in the classroom to help all the children create and build their rockets. Jonathan Needleman for creating a math unit for the oldest students where they used math to try and figure out how to measure the height their rockets reached and on launch day they tested their home made altimeters. Oliver Hine for once again, helping all the rockets leave the launch pad!
